Dershowitz: I Challenge Jimmy Carter to Human Rights Debate at Cardozo

Alan Dershowitz, Felix Frankfurter professor of law at Harvard Law School, has challenged former president Jimmy Carter to a debate on his human rights record.

Dershowitz spoke by telephone to a reporter with The Jewish Press, on Monday, April 8, in response to the news that the Cardozo School of Law’s Journal of Conflict Resolution will be honoring Carter with the “International Advocate for Peace” Award this Wednesday, April 10, as reported that morning.

During the course of the interview, the law professor recounted the widespread death and devastation caused by Carter’s efforts at “human rights.”

“What should be discussed is not Jimmy Carter’s role as a peacemaker, but instead it should be his role as a deal breaker,” said Dershowitz. He then proceeded to tick off the bases for his reasoning.

New York's Yeshiva University Engulfed In Controversy Over Jimmy Carter Peace Award

Tensions are flaring at New York’s prestigious Yeshiva University and its Cardozo School of Law in the wake of growing protests against a decision to bestow an “International Advocate for Peace Award” on former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

The award, handed out by Cardozo’s student-run Journal of Conflict Resolution, is to be given to Carter on Wednesday at a ceremony at Cardozo’s Greenwich Village campus in Manhattan. Some Cardozo alumni have threatened to physically block Carter’s way when he arrives, while others have launched a public campaign to have both the ceremony and the award cancelled altogether.

Although the decision to salute Carter was announced only a few days ago, it still has the potential to develop into a major confrontation in light of Yeshiva University’s preeminent position in American Modern Orthodoxy, in which right-wing views on Israel, the Palestinians – and Jimmy Carter – are prevalent.

A so-called “Coalition of Concerned Cardozo Alumni” has set up a website calling on Cardozo graduates to “condition any continued support of Cardozo, be it financial or otherwise, on the cancellation of this event.” Protests against the decision to honor Carter have also spread in the right wing and pro-settler blogosphere, and these have now been reinforced by Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz, a long time critic of Carter and his attitude toward Israel.

WikiLeaks: We Don’t Intend To Build Nukes, Israel Told US In 1975

WikiLeaks releases 'Kissinger Cables'

Israel’s leaders, in private exchanges with senior US officials in 1975, flatly denied that Israel possessed nuclear weapons, and foreign minister Yigal Allon also claimed Israel had no intention to build such weapons, according to diplomatic cables published this week by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks.

This despite the fact that, according to foreign reports, Israel is now believed to have begun full-scale production of nuclear weapons soon after the 1967 war, and to have stockpiled a number of nuclear weapons by the early 1970s.

The cables are part of a trove of more than 1.7 million US diplomatic cables sent between 1973 and 1976. Among the 5,000-plus documents that deal with Israel are messages that shine light on the development of Israel’s nuclear program, as well as on Israel’s relationship with pre-revolutionary Iran and a 1973 plan by then-defense minister Moshe Dayan to extend Israeli citizenship to Palestinian residents of Ramallah and Bethlehem.

In May 1975, senator Howard Baker asked prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and defense minister (today President) Shimon Peres about speculation that Israel had acquired nuclear weapons.

Jewish Atrocities At Palestinian Village Of Deir Yassin, 65 Years Ago…And Today

--CLIP
The messy story that the President would not engage is that it was a tale of colonialism, nationalism, military gangs, and “Compulsory transfer”, what today we would call Ethnic Cleansing.

Palestine was ethnically cleansed of half of its indigenous population, who were made refugees in 1948. That population was replaced by Jewish immigrants from Europe, Russia, and Middle East. Kick out the Palestinian indigenous people, replace them with Jewish immigrants, to create a Jewish majority. This is the horror of 1948.

That fundamental injustice remains un-atoned, un-accounted for, and un-just. It also remain, largely unheard, in the American media.

Palestinians, and human rights activists remember. The annual calendar serves to remind them, and us, of atrocities that were inflicted on a defenseless population by Zionist terrorist organizations that were directly involved in the creation of the state of Israel. This is the origin of America’s “closest ally” in the region, this is the foundation of “the only real democracy”—so we are told—in the region. The origin is a tale of ethnic cleansing and murder.

Warsaw Ghetto Fighter To Israeli Youth: Rise Up Against The Occupation

Statements challenging the national narrative aren’t exactly common in Israel on Holocaust Remembrance Day. So it was particularly refreshing to read on the Walla news portal about a different sort of speech delivered in honor of the day. According to the site [Hebrew], Havka Folman-Raban, who fought in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, said the following words in a ceremony attended by Israeli youth at the Ghetto Fighters’ House Museum in northern Israel:

Continue the uprising, but a different uprising, a modern one, against all evil. Rise up against racism, violence and hatred of the other, and the inequality. Rise up against the occupation, we mustn’t rule and humiliate another people. It is important to achieve peace and an end to the cycle of bloodshed.

Israeli Troops Shoot Palestinian Photographer In The Face

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES

Israeli soldiers target a Palestinian photographer who was taking pictures of them invading Aida Refugee Camp, shooting him in the face with a rubber-coated steel bullet.

At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, Israeli soldiers entered Aida Refugee Camp through a gate in the separation wall dividing Rachel’s Tomb from Bethlehem. There were no clashes at the time, and their presence in the camp was not provoked, but was itself a provocation.

Mohammad Al-Azza began photographing the advancing soldiers from the second-floor balcony of the Lajee Center, a children’s center near the camp entrance where he has long volunteered in the media unit. He was eager to use the center’s new camera, a Canon 600D with a 50-250mm zoom lens.

As he was photographing, one of the soldiers shouted at him in Arabic to “Go home!” Mohammad replied, “Why? I’m only taking pictures!” The soldiers continued shouting at him, “Go inside! Go inside!”

Mohammad replied, “No, I will not go! As you have a gun and shoot at children, I have a camera and I’m taking pictures—I do nothing to you!”

Israel’s Richest Man Risks Anger Over UK Move

Idan Ofer, Israel’s richest man, is relocating to London in a move likely to inflame debate about unfettered wealth and inequality in his country.

Mr Ofer, 57, who has an estimated net worth of $6.5bn, is making the move for what an associate said were personal reasons. His mother lives in London and his son recently left the Israeli army and plans to study abroad, possibly in the UK.

“There are a number of family reasons which mean it makes sense for him to spend more time in London than he has previously and make that more of a base,” a person close to the Israeli billionaire told the Financial Times on Monday.

Like Israel’s other “tycoons”, he has suffered a beating from the Israeli media and in public opinion since the 2011 social protests, when hundreds of thousands of middle-class citizens demonstrated against high living costs and an economy largely controlled by a few rich family conglomerates.

Thatcher Was Trailblazer Who Said She ‘Owed Nothing’ To Feminism

Margaret Thatcher once said she owed nothing to feminism, but the only woman ever to become British prime minister unwittingly cleared the way for other women to succeed in the male-dominated world of politics, observers said on Tuesday.

In the impassioned debate sparked by her death on Monday, Thatcher’s role as a pioneer for women in politics is among the thorniest subjects.

In a glowing tribute in which he described her as a “true friend” of the United States, President Barack Obama said she was an example to girls that “there is no glass ceiling that can’t be shattered.”

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Tuesday that Thatcher “was a woman who changed history for women”.

Yet in 11 years in office, Thatcher only appointed one woman to any of her cabinets, elevating Janet Young to leader of parliament’s upper House of Lords.

Nugent Calls Obama ‘The Chicago Gangster’ And Asks NRA Host To ‘Help Me Shoot Somebody’

Conservative rocker Ted Nugent on Monday insisted that he had just been using a metaphor when he called President Barack Obama “the Chicago gangster” and then asked a NRA television host to “help me shoot somebody.”

In an interview on NRA News, host Cam Edwards explained that the president’s proposed universal background check legislation might as well be called “the Ban Ted Nugent Act of 2013.”

“Do you realize, Ted, that under the language right now, any time somebody went to your ranch and you loaned them a gun to do some hunting or to do some plinking that would be a five-year felony?” Edwards told Nugent.

The Motor City Madman reminded Edwards that it was only a year ago that he had promised to be “dead or in jail” by the Spring of 2013 if Obama was re-elected.

“And I know it caught a lot of my friends off guard, when I said if this America-hater, if this freedom-hater, if this enemy of America becomes the president again I’ll either be dead or in jail,” Nugent recalled. “So it’s funny that I might be dead or in jail. And that is so indicative of how callous and disconnected some are, because you are talking about arbitrary, punitive, capricious draconian felonies.”

Job Openings at Highest Since 2008 Signal U.S. Rebound

Source: Bloomberg

Job openings climbed in February to the highest level in almost five years, signaling U.S. employers were preparing to expand before federal government budget cuts took effect last month.

The number of positions waiting to be filled rose by 314,000 to 3.93 million, the most since May 2008, from a revised 3.61 million the prior month, the Labor Department said today in Washington. The pace of hiring increased to a three-month high.

The report, which followed data last week showing payroll gains cooled in March from a one-year high, indicates the labor market was gaining momentum before across-the-board cuts in government spending went into effect on March 1. Federal Reserve policy makers are waiting for a sustained pickup in hiring and a drop in the unemployment rate before tapering record stimulus.

“It makes you wonder if the March payrolls report was an anomaly,” said Brian Jones, a senior U.S. economist at Societe Generale in New York, who projected openings would increase. “Things are getting better. Job openings will continue to improve.”

Broadcasters Worry About 'Zero TV' Homes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some people have had it with TV. They've had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don't like timing their lives around network show schedules. They're tired of $100-plus monthly bills.

A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don't even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. These people are watching shows and movies on the Internet, sometimes via cellphone connections. Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from 2 million in 2007.

Winning back the Zero TV crowd will be one of the many issues broadcasters discuss at their national meeting, called the NAB Show, taking place this week in Las Vegas.
While show creators and networks make money from this group's viewing habits through deals with online video providers and from advertising on their own websites and apps, broadcasters only get paid when they relay such programming in traditional ways. Unless broadcasters can adapt to modern platforms, their revenue from Zero TV viewers will be zero.
