'The Conners' to debut with live episode starring New Hampshire primary vote

Manchester Union-Leader

LOS ANGELES - ABC is expanding its stake in live sitcoms to include "The Conners."

The followup series to "Roseanne" will go live on the night of the New Hampshire Primary, Tuesday, Feb. 11, and ABC News's coverage of the real-time results of that political event will be incorporated into the broadcast, which will be performed and air live on both the east and west coasts.

This still-to-be-titled episode will start with Mark (Ames McNamara) watching the results of the primary for a school report with Harris (Emma Kenney), who is apathetic to the electoral process and believes money's influence in politics means real change is impossible. This allows the rest of the family to weigh in with their usual differing takes on why people should vote, including the idea of voting for a candidate that you may not love but who you think will "screw you the least."

But the episode won't be 100% focused on politics: Louise (guest star Katey Sagal) gets an opportunity that might send her away from Lanford, which causes the family to interfere in her and Dan's (John Goodman) complicated relationship by throwing a surprise going-away party.

Bernie Sanders: We will create a government that represents the working class, not billionaires

Des Moines Register

As the Feb. 3 caucus approaches, Iowans face a choice: Are we going to settle for a status quo that is leaving so many behind? Or are we going to come together to finally transform our country so that our government works for all of us?

Our grassroots campaign clearly represents the latter — which is why polls consistently show us defeating Donald Trump, who is the most dangerous and corrupt president in modern history.

As you consider which Democratic candidate to support, you deserve to know exactly how our agenda stands out — and how it takes on the corporations, the billionaires and the corruption that is harming America.

We are the only leading campaign that has not taken any money from billionaires. We reject corporate money. Unlike some other candidates, our campaign is not relying on a super PAC — we are pushing to outlaw super PACs. We are a 100 percent grassroots-funded effort through small-dollar donations from working people.

Ken Jennings was asked to run for Senate

Politico

Jeopardy wunderkind Ken Jennings reveals that in 2004 he was approached by both Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Harry Reid about running against Sen. Orrin Hatch in Utah.

"I am not making this up. Win on a game show and you can apparently run for the US Senate. That was when I realized the Democratic Party was f@#$ed in '04," Jennings said during an online question and answer session.

The gameshow whiz's answers on Reddit showcases a wry sense of humor -- and his ability to land a punchline.

Trump's Republican challengers won't appear on Wisconsin primary ballot

Source: WISN-TV

Republicans decided to only list President Donald Trump's name on the April 7 primary ballot, leaving out two other Republicans running against Trump: former Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld.

"I'm pissed off," Walsh told WISN 12 News while campaigning in New Hampshire. "I’m on the ballot in California and Texas but not Wisconsin. Florida, but not Wisconsin. How much sense does that make? That's a bunch of (expletive). That’s a bunch of B.S. The Wisconsin party chairman is on his knees right now kissing Donald Trump's feet."

Per state law, the Wisconsin Presidential Preference Selection Committee has the sole discretion to determine who appears on the ballot based upon candidates who are "generally advocated or recognized in the national news media throughout the United States."

Warren deploys Castro in bid to get her mojo back

Politico

NEW YORK — With an unusual flurry of national media appearances and the rollout of her highest profile endorsement to date — former presidential candidate Julián Castro — Elizabeth Warren is trying to give her campaign a jolt in the final weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

For most of her presidential run, the Massachusetts senator had spurned Beltway-centric Sunday shows, mostly stayed away from the cable news circuit, and only occasionally went on national TV shows. But as her polling and fundraising has dipped in recent weeks, Warren has embarked on an energetic media tour, with interviews on NBC’s “Meet the Press,“ CNN’s “State of the Union,“ NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,“ ABC’s “The View,“ and MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show“ — all since Sunday. She'll keep up the circuit with an appearance on MSNBC's “Morning Joe“ on Wednesday morning.

The campaign simultaneously rolled out Castro’s endorsement on Monday with a web video that quickly earned millions of views, then a rally here before a thunderous audience of about 3,000 people, plus a large overflow crowd outside, at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

“We’re meeting at a very special moment in this entire campaign cycle. We’re less than a month away from when voting starts in Iowa,” Castro, who walked out to Selena's “Baila Esta Cumbia,” said in introducing Warren. "More than any other candidate in this race, more than any other candidate that’s going to be on that debate stage in a few days, Elizabeth Warren is the candidate who can unite the entire Democratic party."

Poll: 47 percent approve of Trump strike on Soleimani

Source: The Hill

Nearly half of American voters approve of President Trump's decision to order the airstrike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, one of the most powerful officials in Iran and the leader of its elite Quds Force, according to a new Morning Consult Poll.

The survey, which was released on Wednesday, found that 47 percent of American voters supported Trump's move to authorize a drone strike on Soleimani outside the Baghdad airport last week. Forty percent of voters said they opposed the decision, while 14 percent said they did not have an opinion.

The opinions divided strongly along with partisan lines, with 70 percent of Democrats opposing the airstrike and 85 percent of Republicans supporting it. Sixty-one percent of Republican respondents strongly approved Trump's decision.

The airstrike that killed Soleimani could have far-reaching consequences in the Middle East. Iran, who vowed retaliation, on Tuesday night claimed responsibility for firing more than a dozen ballistic missiles at Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops and coalition personnel. The attacks led to zero casualties, according to early reports.
