in case he gets picked up and turned over to U.S. Marshals. He'll be unable to return to the country because there is no statute of limitations once he is charged and declared a fugitive.

If he has the evidence of his innocence as he claims, it should be easy enough to show that the government doesn't have enough evidence in a situation like he is in where such trials are often very publicly displayed in the media.
