With the passage of the “Bernie bill” earlier this year, Sanders, an independent, will avoid the type of controversy that surrounded his filing for the 2016 presidential primary.

With the new law, formerly House Bill 588, in place, a presidential primary candidate is no longer required to be a registered member of the party in which he or she wishes to file.

Instead the candidate must be only “a recognized candidate for President in the party” in which he or she files.
