(43,173 posts)All the Dictators of the world are supporting one another on one side, and on the other is Democracy, OUR democracy, the last best hope for freedom for people to govern themselves and run their own lives.
This is just like WWII, when the world split into Allies and Axis. The Allies won, of course, and formed the United Nations, and now all that is under constant attack.
Your live and those of your children and grandchildren will change irrevocably if Democracy does not succeed in defeating dictatorship in America. It will be 6 or 7 generations before the subject will be broached again.

Until the Social Media Companies are regulated as a utility,or Common Carrier, nothing changes. There is a reason European Countries refuse to allow FB and other social media in. China is another case study. After all, they are a Military Dictatorship.
We as Dems are way behind in our Digital Media operations. Rethugs started putting their data bases together in 1970's making use of Voter Registration data from County Clerks. Now this same data seems to pop up in foreign hands,by design.

But to give the Rooskis some small credit, I suspect that theyre doing what they do for Holy Mother Russia. And, unlike the Republicans in currently the White House and the US Senate, I doubt THEYD stand for foreign interference in THEIR elections.

(47,482 posts)if not possibly worse. I pretty much avoided the Primaries Forum, as I really didn't have a preference and the infighting was off the chart. So far, things seem far more civil in comparison - better rules and fewer trolls perhaps?
A lot of the fighting we see is inevitable at this point in a primary. This year, the main concern of most Democrats is to be sure whoever we nominate can beat Trump. That could account for a lot of the passion and energy.
Of course, there are a few jerks here and there, but there always were. Being we are not sheep, like most republicans, we will disagree and sometimes get a bit too rowdy and snarky. In the end, we will come together to defeat Donald Trump.

(90,708 posts)I may drop a query line to the Admins, though that's harder these days--they seem to have wound up this little universe and then sensibly withdrawn to let it run itself.
Mostly though, when engaged in a heated discussion I try to recognize bait when it floats by. If you rise to the bait, it's your own post that may get deleted.
Note: not a Meta post. Not interfering with forum moderation. Just explaining same.

I've seen that where the baited one gets alerted. When I was a kid, my sister did that to me all the time. I got in far more trouble than her because of it. To this day, she is still embarrassed though!
I make it a point to always "Welcome to DU" to newcomers. One, it is a nice thing to do (a lot of people welcomed me years ago) and two, if they aren't legit, they know their newness is apparent.
I do remember that it did make me feel good to have people welcome me way back in 2004. It helps to draw people into the conversation. If their motives aren't good, it will become obvious.
Note: Also not a Meta post, just sharing some observations!

As to a Trump crime commission, and the absolute necessity for one, one has only to remember the lack of investigation into the Bush/Cheney crime cabal, and how that lack, that refusal to investigate the criminals only emboldened the criminals to commit more crimes.

(6,699 posts)I lived there for eight years, and it's convenient as hell. You can actually study the book, listen to the pundits/etc and make up your mind. Work on the ballot a little each night until you have the ballot completed.
I can't fathom trying to remember all the candidates you want to vote for: judges, local agencies that aren't designated with a D after their name, ballot measures, etc, etc. Unreal! And then STANDING IN LINE FOR AN HOUR OR MORE??? BULL SHIT on that!
If you don't get your ballot in the mail, you go down to the elections office and find out why BEFORE THE DEADLINE!
...and finally, there is a "PAPER BALLOT" to refer back to.
This is the most important election in my 54 years of voting...BY FAR!! Nothing comes this close. EVERY vote counts!!

(2,412 posts)Thanks for this. Our political discourse has become a battleground, imitating Trump, Republican Style and Fox Style of communications. Its become all about the fight. (1,663 posts)I've also come to realization that all I can do is what I've done since voting for Gore as a hopeful young teen.... GOTV! Transporting the elderly, making sure everyone has water (stays hydrated) in the lines, making sure everyone knows where and how to vote in underserved precincts, and actually voting, myself. Don't get into panic mode, get into action mode!
I truly believe that the right candidate will move all the necessary parts of the electorate. As long as the more informed of us do the work of gotv, I believe we will win.
The trolls among us are going to do whatever they do. Don't even pay them dust. Instead, get in contact with the relatives you only see at family reunions and make sure they're going to vote. Puff them up and let them know the election is in their hands. If early mail-in voting is available, it's a great idea to inform them of the process.

(7,814 posts)When a real live Bloomberg person called me on my landline, I assured him cheerfully that if Mr. Bloomberg was the nominee, I would vote for him. I did not add that the caller had interrupted my daily prayers that Bloomberg would NOT be the nominee. I don't know whether the caller detected duplicity in my tone of voice, but he had no grounds to challenge me on.
A few moments ago, I had to declare myself undecided in order to reply to your post, but that was a lie. I decided long ago, and can hardly wait for the primary. But I would never declare my allegiance on DU: we keep getting caught up in these mares' nest of disagreement, and fuming and fussing, which exhaust us, and, I think, make some of us more cynical.
In fact, although I agree that The Russians Have Come!, I also think we don't need any real Russians to confuse and distract us. Basic human nature and a generally combative culture make it all too easy to create enemies, to bash the enemies we have created, and to generally take our eyes off the ball.
And we have one ball we should never take our eyes off of, which is whether our elections are being stolen. We can be as politically virtuous as we want, and vote, I hope, for a dynamite candidate, but if the election is stolen, we have wasted another four years. Elect Democratic governors, people, and tell them the election technology you want is a No 2 pencil.

(12,712 posts)However, I don't understand. This sounds like red scare to me.
I would think that new members and those who have very low post counts would be suspect if their content suggested something fishy. I could even see jacking up the post count with trivial comments if we are talking about suspects, foreign trolls, sock puppets, etc.
It would be helpful to me to have some more evidence as to how the contention that their are even enough extraneous members here in order to be that influential, especially when there are so many with rather large post counts, (at least in the thousands) who frequently do OP's and comments. If you are suggesting long-term plants, I really would question that and maybe suspend judgement barring more explanation as to how that is so and maybe some anecdotes to at least support such a contention.
My opinion is that DU may be on the radar, but I think the social media, et al, are far more worthy of any time and investment from nefarious influences. Injecting undue paranoia and suspicion though, would be a good method of having a negative impact on the trust and candidness of members and could work by way of implication alone. That is a question to consider. Does implying we are a target make us all seem a bit more important and special as an online force?
Then to connect that and the vote to a pandemic that is only a potential so far seems like going out on a limb and fear mongering to make a point. It isn't even time to panic, yet.
Meanwhile, in our neck of the woods, people have diverse opinions, argue, fight, agree, learn, etc., in what looks like a rather normal fashion, overall, to me, and I think we do it all fine without help. I also think that it is often very difficult to change people's biased views, especially in little skirmishes on a mere forum and, in fact, the arguing can help to cement their views, (now that sounds like a good tactic if their views are misinformed or just plain wrong) so I wonder how much of a waste of time micromanaged propaganda here would be when there is so much fertile ground and a much larger audience on social media, alternative media, etc.?
So, let's not go full McCarthy here and rouse our own rabble and then mix it all together into a Chicken Little salad, just for the sake of sanity. We can cross bridges as we come to them, perhaps and avoid being overly paranoid about our members, maybe? Or does that make me suspect?

(7,541 posts)I also would like to know why Warren is the only candidate that says they will put the Republican lawbreakers in jail. The reason we have a totally lawless administration now is because non-confrontational Dems decided it would be for the best to let bygones be bygones and not prosecute the crimes of the GOP. Failure to put Reagan's gang in jail and failure to put Cheney's gang in jail led directly to this moment. The GOP is a criminal organization that launders billions of dollars of foreign and illegal funds for it's candidates at the behest of the one percent and global criminal syndicates around the world.
THEY NEED TO GO TO JAIL OR IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN ONLY WORSE, and we can kiss our Democracy goodbye.

(10,175 posts)About who he wants Trump to run against on the democratic side. In fact he is so stupid about keeping his preferences to himself that the complicit corporate media has been shouting about Russia's pick since Bernie began running.
Putin's choice is the kiss of death for any Democratic candidate. But for some amazing, astonishing, unknown reason, Democrats are willing to vote in Putin's choice over and over again. Despite the fact that the corporate media has been claiming Bernie is Putin's favorite since the beginning of the campaign, Democrats are lining up to vote for Bernie, it's astounding.
Maybe, could it be, that Putin (and his trolls) isn't in favor of Bernie but is spreading that lie with the help of our socialism phobic corporate media in order to stop Bernie?

This schlub tried to set himself up in NY city, the schlub thinks he's a real estate developer. Anywho, the schlub gets in debt to some Russian mobsters, and then gets fired from his his own TV show. Anyway the schlub goes to Russia and talks with Putin, Putin bank rolls him to run for President, I know, totally unbelievable. The schlub even has his Capos have meetings, I know right, in a building the schlub owns.
So then, to get the schlub elected, this Putin guy, uses some computer techno BS, I don't know how it works, it's some computer BS. Anywho this computer BS gets lots of eyes to believe anything that's popular, so the computer BS, it starts trending, and targeting, and no two people see the SAME THING. So the computer BS, starts feeding into the eyes ego, and get this, the computer BS gets both sides of the Democratic party riled up. There's even this former NSA hacker dude, turned Russia asset and his website involved.
Got off track... both camps are seeing different news, because the computer BS is targeting each eye. Now the ADs, oops I mean computer BS, now the ADs are reading all the websites you visit, friends, family, coworkers, it makes this "profile," now the ADs can link every thing you do. Did you log off the site? yes, well too bad, the ADs are stored until you log back in. So the ADs track all you do, on all websites, everywhere, and save it until you log in for a sync. After the ADs sync you start seeing targets, and your mom sees her own targets, grandma, grandpa, yup they see their own targets.
Now you think it's all made up, it's not, your neighbor sees their own targets, you don't like a target? click no, then you never see it again. The ADs their learning, linking, targeting, listening, BTW you buy an echo yet? well it's listening... your phone, it heard the theme song to your favorite TV show. your phone, it tracks you too, it tracks your habits, it tracks your location, it tracks your schedule. You don't like it, too bad, they gonna track you.
Now you think I'm some tinfoil hat wearing freak, nope, I'm your neighbor, you buddy from work, the stranger that you bumped into at the grocery store. That bump, yup your DATA crossed my DATA. Now I don't know you but the ADs do. The ADs know me too. "Did you drop your pen?" I said, now you see ADs for pens, 3 pack, at your grocery store, aisle 3.
I got off track, So this Putin guy, he meets up with the facebook guy, the twitter guy, the microsoft guy, the google guy. all at different times, all don't know the others met him. Did the Putin guy do it, or did the ADs make you think that? you were already thinking something wasn't sitting right with one candidate, so the ADs gave you a closer pick, did you even know?? Well did ya??
Your in the booth, undecided, and then it hits ya, CANDIDATE, but how, when, I didn't like them, their popular with the kids, neighbors, coworkers, friends, I want to tell everyone about them, They will make things better. I saw it on TV, facebook, twitter, MSN, google.
Everyone is being targeted, the smart phone, the TV, the PC, the News, ALL OF IT. Can you even trust your CANDIDATE? I didn't see anything bad about my CANDIDATE, just bad about everyone else's CANDIDATE. My coworker tried to warn me, but they didn't show me the news article they were reading, and google didn't show me any bad news, so it's the Putin guy, yeah that's it, I heard the Putin guy was behind the whole thing. Makes sense, I saw it on the news, or Mom did, Grandma, Grandpa, I trust them.
Turning off social media will not stop the tracking, government will not stop the tracking, we are being targeted.

(626 posts)Excellently written narrative. You make some excellent points about the slicing and dicing (granularization?) of our lfe actions into single data points. All true. But I hope you are NOT trying to say that Putin/Russia is NOT using this in sync with the GOP to disrupt us.
THAT is ABSOLUTELY happening.

(32,705 posts)I will look into voting by mail, but doesn't that make it easy for them to toss my vote in the trash?
Also, if we're all that sick, who would be available to count the votes? I'm guessing the elections would be cancelled if things got to that point.

(9,074 posts)Ive read for quite awhile, and the primaries forum is always the same two or three dozen names. DU is a small site.
I absolutely believe trolls are on Twitter and in subreddits.
Here just feels like small game. And the place is highly anti-Bernie anyway.
Just vote blue no matter what and dont abet right-wing nonsense. Its an easy ask. More people should be manage it than currently are. Ive never attacked Biden or Bloomberg from the right. Cant say the same for the attacks on Bernie at the moment. Its bothering me a lot, even though hes not really my candidate at the moment.

(45 posts)What are you smokin? Bernie is beating trump all over the country, and no one was beating Bernie until the media started wearing their tongues to the bone criticizing Bernie all day long and most of the night.
Those town halls are the biggest joke ever. I will never watch that station again and I'm canceling it if possible.
This set up of Bernie with fake stories about Cuba just before the debates. He said it was good they taught people to read (I think we should try that in America .)
Town halls where some can sit and others can't.
Raving over Joe Biden's so-called "great performance" just because he knew he was running for the presidency.
And last but not least having Bernie go first on one night and then most everyone else goes together after that on another night, so they can all Bernie bash before people vote in S.C.
The fix is in and all the bots are running out voting for who they were told to vote for.

(626 posts)Well said, and thank you.
In the last two weeks I have been accused of being a Bernie Bro who is doing Putin's bidding (IRL) for the egregious offense of saying something like this.
Not as clearly as you, but still....

(23,102 posts)They have a robust (wrong!) voter signature matching program used on ALL votes by mail that threw out tens of thousands of votes in 2018, most because the person had aged and their signature changed. If your signature doesn't match, I don't think they notify you, but not sure if they claim to do this or not. You can go to a database to see if your voted was recorded, but it's difficult to get it reinstated. You have to go downtown, to an office that's only open 10-4 M-F, wait forever, then finally have a turn with an unfriendly official.
If you aren't too sick, voting early in person is best because those votes aren't signature matched and you can vote at any precinct, so no lines either - easy peasy.

(3,180 posts)As long as we observe the standard precautions, wash hands, ect; we will be okay. I'm not one that wants the world to panic here. I say, take a breath and bring it down a notch.
