Are Democrats going to remain silent while Bernie Sanders gets Red Baited? In case you have forgotten what McCarthyism is, here is refresher course.
McCarthyism
McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. The term refers to U.S. senator Joseph McCarthy and has its origins in the period in the United States known as the Second Red Scare, lasting from the late 1940s through the 1950s. It was characterized by heightened political repression and a campaign spreading fear of communist influence on American institutions and of espionage by Soviet agents. After the mid-1950s, McCarthyism began to decline, mainly due to the gradual loss of public popularity and opposition from the U.S. Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Earl Warren. The Warren Court made a series of rulings that helped bring an end to McCarthyism.

(23 posts)Bernie actually is a socialist, silly.
McCarthyism is, first of all, an accusation that someone is a socialist or a communist. The subversion/treason part is derived from that.
Red-baiting is calling someone a socialist or communist, when they aren't. Bernie is a socialist.
More importantly, if he is the nominee, the Republicans will make sure everyone knows he's a red. Sure, they'll accuse anyone, but it will be much harder to stick if isn't true.
But it is true, and for anyone over the age of 50 -- the most reliable voters -- Bernie is a red, and that is a big reason why polls show most voters don't want a socialist.

(47,711 posts)That is quite a stretch. Bernie is getting vetted, as all front-runners do. Things he has done and said in the past will come out and voters can decide if they think they are relevant.
No one is getting a free pass here. If you want to be president of the United States, you will be held accountable for things you've done. Ask Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden. Very little will go unnoticed.
