Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSome Tea Party Republicans in South Carolina are voting for Bernie Sanders..yikes🙄
Karen Martin is an organizer for a local Tea Party group in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and a registered Republican. On February 29, shell cast a vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders in the South Carolina Democratic primary.
Some Republicans, including the presidents son, have been boosting Sanders, perhaps to encourage division within the Democratic Party. But Martin told me that her vote is about proving a different point.
She and other members of the Tea Party movement in South Carolina want to end the states open primary system, which they believe leads to excessively moderate candidates breaking through. Were not necessarily looking to disrupt any additional things. And we really dont care who comes out of South Carolina on top, she said
Crossover voting when voters from one party vote in the others primary to lift a specific candidate isnt new. With open primaries in more than 20 states, crossover voting has been a part of primary politics for years. In fact, it was in South Carolina (and Michigan) two decades ago that hundreds of Democrats switched affiliations to vote for then-presidential candidate John McCain, an effort the Bush campaign then used against McCain.
Back in 2000, a Bush campaign spokesperson denounced the purported alliance between the limousine-liberal Democrats and the McCain campaign as distorting the intent of real Republican vote
cross-party voting is not a good thing. We have to protect our elections from this or we will lose like 2016
paper ballot is a must...

As if the country is not already polarized enough.
Don't believe them, they are just disrupters, even if they are right and cross-over voting should be banned.

(12,008 posts)Even in an open primary state, if you vote in the Dem primary, you cannot vote in the Republican primary. But it does create a different potential conflict, if only one party is running a competitive race.
This year is so weird though, "because, Trump." There are lots of Republicans and right-leaning independents who genuinely don't like Trump, and if they cross over to our primary to vote for someone they would actually prefer to Trump in November, then they are actually serving the purposes of the Democratic party... because those are voters who would indeed help us win in November.

(5,355 posts)Where ever voters can cross over, republicans have an "operation chaos" going on to skew the vote in favor of the cabdidate they think would be the easiest to beat.

(12,008 posts)They could also be skewing the vote in favor of people they really would like to be able to vote for in November, since so many don't Republicans or right-leaning independents don't like Trump. Then it's not "chaos," it's actually helping us put up a candidate who could more easily steal votes from Trump. Crossover voting is complicated.

(21,860 posts)ads and discussions in states where open primaries exist, explaining what should be obvious. Primaries are the PARTY's opportunity for its MEMBERS to choose their candidate. So closed primaries are the only way that makes sense.
But since the opportunity for disruption is probably the reason why some states allow open primaries, a discussion would not go far.

(7,413 posts)They also only want the registered party members voting in their primaries.
This South Carolina push is actually a publicity stunt because some SC Republicans have been trying to end open primaries there for years and they are trying to generate Democratic support to get it through the legislature. There was an article about it two weeks ago.

(21,860 posts)the other way around since it is R's that we hear about using open primaries to disrupt and muddy Dem primaries. They did it in 2008 primaries between Obama and Clinton to feed divisions in the party.

My point? Simply keep in mind that they are still Republicans and they cannot be trusted.
As for myself I refuse to get involved in arguing with anyone over which candidate is better so as not to sway someone to vote for "my" choice.
What I do intend to do is give 100% of my support to whichever Democrat we choose.

(17,663 posts)I am in favor of closed primaries. But tampering can still occur there by people changing their registration.
Especially with pro-voter changes like moving registration deadlines closer to election dates, it is still possible to orchestrate some tampering with the out-of-office party when the incumbent is running for re-election.
Open primaries just make it MUCH easier. More people can be convinced to do that one thing the day of the election, than also the prerequisite step of changing their registration in time for a closed primary.
Open primaries are much worse, but closed primaries are not immune.

(22,891 posts)You think caucuses are a headache.. (and yes they are).. open primaries are an open invitation to the destruction of our party. Open Primaries.. again, what nimrod came up with this useless idea..
Please for the love of God, I hope no one answers me with they are a unregistered democrat and they do no want to register but want a say who our candidate is.. My answer to that is.. join or move on.. Why should our party be subject to this type of messing with our numbers because you do not want to register.
This time it is such a headache because so many states will not be having a republican primary and so they have nothing to lose.
Parties are for registered members.
