Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forum53% of Bernie supporters will vote for nominee. My son says Biden is just like a Republican.
Not this again!! Not another 2016!!
First of all, my son posted a clip of Biden from 1995 where he is supporting the balanced budget amendment. Biden states he will cut Social Security and Medicare to balance the budget. Son shared it on FB, so he got it from someone, so it's making the rounds. I found the clip on YouTube.
Then I saw this article:
Only a small majority of Bernie Sanders voters say they will definitely support the eventual Democratic nominee at the 2020 election if the independent Vermont senator does not win the race, according to a poll.
The National Emerson College Poll of 1,128 registered voters between January 21 and January 23 found that 53 percent of Sanders supporters said "yes" when asked if they would support the Democratic nominee even if it is not their candidate.
Another 31 percent of Sanders supporters said it depends on who the nominee is and 16 percent flat-out said no. The poll, conducted via landline calls and an online panel, has a 2.8 percentage point margin of error.
The poll suggests some Sanders supporters are out of step with their own chosen candidate on the question of supporting the Democratic nominee regardless of who it is.

(17,867 posts)At least the Democratic party talks about getting the revenue to do these things. There is no other option is this country. The other party is a fascist kleptocracy infused with dangerous magical thinking. This party thinks nothing of making others suffer. In fact it delights in doing it.
I was a Republican up until the invasion of Iraq. I became an independent, and eventually a Democrat. I always had a Libertarian bent.
I honestly don't think that the positions that Warren and Sanders have carved out can win Wisconsin, and, if you don't win that state, you don't win the election. I am from Iowa, but I have worked closely for many years with folks in Wisconsin. I just don't see it happening.
How could anyone who has not drunk to Kool-Aid imagine the country can survive another four years of this man and this party in control.

(4,490 posts)Really, without having a specific Debt/GDP ratio, and some other numbers, saying we need to "pay down our debt" is a pretty meaningless statement. Same with "fiscal responsibility".
A big problem with the topic is that most think of the debt the same way they think about personal finances, so that is how it's communicated. It's often very wrong, but it's almost by necessity considering the extremely poor economic education level of the vast majority of people. It's very different when you get to a macro level, especially for the U.S. The fact that we print our own money, control intrest rates, and are the global currency, really changes things from how people typically think of money.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
You cannot print money to tackle the debt. That leads to hyperinflation and would destroy the country. As to her plans, some are here...

Sanders did 39 events on Clinton's behalf and I forget how many rallies with Clinton in 2016. But that is all he can do, try to convince. He has said it itself, this isn't really about him.
If another candidate can't convince people to vote for them, that's on that candidate. That is just how that is.

(2,292 posts)The thing thats being missed here is that Sanderss supporters transcend the Democratic Party. I can guarantee you the VAST majority of registered Democrats who support Sanders in the primaries will support the eventual nominee, no matter who that may be. I certainly will, just as I did in 2016.
The nominee, if it isnt Sanders, may well have to earn the votes of non-Democrats who support him. That might be a daunting task, as so many of these people are disaffected by the rightward lurch of the party under the influence of the Third Way movement which has been so strong in Democratic politics since the days of Bill Clinton.
Sanders reflects my values and my hopes for this country, but Im a Vote Blue No Matter Who guy and always have been.

(3,855 posts)Maybe Not but vote shaming has NEVER worked.
I think you should stop calling this a purity test" as that really misses how those voters see this.
Imagine if you were given a house. That's great, right? Now imagine that house is rotting from within from black mold, you will have to pay thousands in back taxes. And there's no working bathroom.
Are you being picky for not wanting this free" house"? Is a working bathroom a purity test? At what point is this house only a temporary reprieve from being homeless again?
Sure you can say your candidate isn't' like that. But millions of people disagree. Millions of people don't' feel they can vote to get rid of Trump if it only means a new trump will just come down the line 4 years later when things are even worse. Millions of Americans think the other Democratic candidates are that house. Maybe pretty on the outside but can we afford the final cost. Brushing that off as a "purity test" tells these people you really don't care what why they vote for whom they do. And if you don't' care about them, why should they listen to you?
Remember, in 2016, thousands of voters voted in swing states but left the Presidential vote blank.
We can scream and whine about how wrong that is. But unless we accept WHY that is, we will keep losing.
It's not on the voters to blindly accept that house because things could be worse. It's up to the candidate to convince the voters why they aren't' that house. It happens that Sanders has been the best at doing that.

With the Iowa caucuses two weeks away, the Bernie Sanders campaign is rolling out oppo research showing that Mr. Biden once said hed consider cost-of-living adjustments in Social Security. In Bernie-speak, this always means cuts.
Or maybe we just aren't speaking the same language.

The Bernie-Biden clash over Social Security, explained
https://www.vox.com/2020/1/22/21074069/joe-biden-social-security-bernie-sanders
Much of this controversy has been fueled by David Sirota who is basically a Twitter attack dog that Sanders hired. Some of his claims are demonstrably false...like the one that claims Biden was lauding Paul Ryan.
Biden is a long-time deficit hawk. Like I said I would be willing to forego a couple lousy COLA increases if Joe feels it's necessary to get major concessions from the Republicans on raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations. But you can rest assured Biden is not about to slash SSI or Medicare as some have suggested. I have confidence that if Biden makes some of us sacrifice a little then others who are much better off will have to give up a lot more. As the article above mentions Obama pretty much felt the exact same way although neither was successful during Barack's two terms thanks to Republican intransigence and unwillingness to compromise.
Or we could go Bernie's preferred way...although I doubt SSI and Medicare would last very much longer if the federal debt skyrockets by $1 or $2 trillion every year.

I want him to be engaged and I'm glad he's engaged. I'm happy that he's supporting Bernie. Bernie is not my personal choice. But as a precinct chair, we don't endorse, especially for president. I have an obligation to voters to be neutral. Also I put in an application as delegate for Joe Biden with Amy and Warren as my alternate preferences.
Family political drama of a different kind.

(58,785 posts)Sanders knows if you repeat lies enough vulnerable people will believe them. So he does. The decades-long version, of course, is "Democrats are just like Republicans."
He really believes this slur against all of us despite daily contradictions for decades.
He really repeats this despicable, conviction-destroying lie virtually every day.

(23,237 posts)Both will vote for Biden, Kloburchar, Buttigieg or Bloomberg. They are moderate Dems and moderate Independents and will not support the big changes Liz and Bernie want.
Way too many Bernie supporters are actually more prone to vote for drumpf madness than a Democrat because it's Sanders madness & anger they like and don't care about his policies. Anyone who likes Bernie for his policies, and I do have friends like that and I used to be in that boat, likes the left wing aspect and will vote for Dems if he isn't the nominee.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
