Sanders Outperforms Biden in Head to Head versus Trump

Bernie Sanders Outperforms Joe Biden in Head to Head Matchup with Donald Trump, New Poll Finds

In a recent survey by Ipsos/Reuters, slightly more respondents said they would vote for Senator Bernie Sanders than former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 election against President Donald Trump.

Though the difference is within the margin of error (3.4 percentage points) 39 percent of the 1,108 adults surveyed between December 18 and 19 preferred Sanders over Trump, compared to 37 percent who preferred Biden.

Biden has maintained a steady lead in national polls over other top candidates for several weeks, but primary voters have far from made up their minds. Recent surveys note growing indecision among Democratic voters and even declining favorability overall for candidates as the field has yet to coalesce around one or even two likely party nominees.

Though Sanders and Warren may be appealing to the same base of young, progressive voters, Sanders began to eclipse the Massachusetts senator after the fourth Democratic debate, when multiple candidates attacked Warren on how she would fund her health care plan.

Sanders' health care plan is no less ambitious, but recent surveys have determined the Vermont senator claims a plurality of support among Latino voters and young people between 18 and 29 years old, demographics likely fueling his late-stage surge to the top of the Democratic field.

In another measure of electability, however, the Sanders-Trump comparison compels more people to vote at the end of the day, according to the survey. Only 20 percent of respondents say they wouldn't vote if the election were held between Sanders and Trump. That's compared to 23 percent and 21 percent who said the same of Biden and Warren versus Trump, respectively.

I'm always amazed when people who disparage polling in general and the "corporate media" that produces them latch on to one favorable poll as significant.

and at or near the top of the DU page so I don't know how you missed it -- this is an unusual poll, and Sanders beats Trump by only 1 point more than Biden beats Trump, though the Newsweek article misleadingly leaves out that info to try to make it seem as if Sanders does 2 points better against Trump than Biden does.

Since the same poll finds Warren losing to Trump by 2 points, I wouldn't expect Warren fans to be happy about it.

They win by the exact same margin: Four points, and it’s the margin that matters, not the total vote.

Something to give rational people pause: The poll isn’t of likely or registered voters, but of the general population. You can trust the results for general opinion purposes, but definitely not for what would happen in an election. People who aren’t registered are less likely to vote. That’s just reality.

So one percent more with the general population means the difference is noise, and that means zilch when the rubber meets the road.

Give me a poll with registered or likely voters, then we can talk.

IOW, I wouldn’t crow about kinda “winning” a general population poll 11 months out.

Ted Kennedy was winning some polls like these in 1979, and look how 1980 turned out for him.

The talking point that Biden can beat trump s undermined by how other Democratic Candidates can as well.

But to me the big point is enthusiasm. Said it before. I will keep saying it. And that last line in the OP sums it up. Trump supporters are really enthusiastic (whether it makes sense for them to be so or not) A Candidate has to drum up something similar.

Sorry but I don't think Biden can do that. Especially since he floated that idea of only serving one term. He is pretty much-saying nothing will really change under him. And after he leaves office we will probably get another Republican, continuing this cycle of switching parties over and over. There is STILL this feeling of anti-establishment feeling and Biden neither will nor can counter that. Buttigieg definitely can't.

There's a difference between answering a poll on your phone as an intellectual exercise, and what happens on election day. How inspired one is to make the effort. And Bernie gives a voter more to vote FOR, in contrast to voting AGAINST someone else in order to go back to some Washington establishment status quo admin again.

Add to that the higher minutes of coverage for Biden. The language used on the MSM surrounding Biden vs Sanders. The presumptuous air in the MSM that Sanders cannot win because he's too radical a shift for the public (but Trump isn't?) So most folks that don't follow every news story as us news junkies do, just assume that if they voted Democratic, that Biden would most likely be the person that would win.

I agree. There is still an anti-establishment feeling out there. I thought the American public failed at a once in a lifetime opportunity last primary to vote in Sanders, who would have won against Trump, and we now would not be living this nightmare. Because the public was in the mood for change. Real change. The left and the right, in their own ways. For the left, Obama's hope and change did not live up to the hype in his primary speeches. And now what's really odd is Obama is saying how he will fight against a candidate that actually works to deliver some of the "change" that many were hoping he was going to bring.

I hope Democratic Americans don't let slip this bonus chance to take advantage of voters desire for bold ideas, and real change. Only this time towards serving the people.

Go Bernie Go!

Is an illusion. Because plenty of the Democratic base are not enthused with a cranky old white guy who talks down to women and minorities—the real base of the party, NOT “progressives.”
