I wonder if there are any studies on reasons why that is so. At a macro level, it's because expenses outpace income.
When I was younger, I didnt find a job that generated sufficient income, while I hardly controlled expenses (e.g. ate out constatnly, beer, failed to get a roommate, bought a brand new car when a used one would have sufficed, etc.).
I'd love to know how many paycheck-to-paycheckers were like me--could fix their own problems if they just made a decision to do so.
Once I did so, it took me about a year to get to where I was saving a little and stick some on 401(k)
Just live within your means.
