Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSanders: I'm sorry that Hillary CLinton is rerunning 2016.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) dismissed former Secretary of State Hillary Clintons recent suggestion that his decision to not endorse her sooner after the two battled for the Democratic nomination in 2016 ended up hurting her in the general election against Donald Trump.
Trump ended up defeating Clinton in a huge political surprise.
Im sorry that Hillary Clinton is rerunning 2016, Sanders, who is running for president again, said in a recent wide-ranging interview with Iowa Press.
I could take out a letter from Hillary Clinton saying, Thank you Bernie for working so hard to try and make me the president of the United States, Sanders added.
Clinton said last week in an interview with Howard Stern that Sanders could have endorsed her sooner in the 2016 race, adding that theres no doubt about it, he hurt me.
She said she was disappointed with Sanders and she hopes he doesnt do it again to whoever gets the nomination.
Sanders, however, rejected Clintons claims.
What I tried to do after the primary was to sit down with her staff, and we did, to create a Democratic platform that was as progressive as it could be. And that ended up happening, Sanders said.
So I dont want to rerun 2016, Sanders continued. Right now our goal is to defeat Donald Trump. I think I am the strongest candidate to do that. If it turns out I am not the Democratic nominee, I will strongly support anybody else.

(58,785 posts)basically just Republicans with pretensions of being something better. Long ago I read everything I could find on him, and since read much more that's turned up, and he's constantly full of blame and accusations: against Democrats, never for himself. 2016 wasn't even the first election "the only progressive leader" helped throw to anti-progressive Republicans by running a splinter candidacy. Knowing and accepting the consequences. But those are never his fault, they're ours.
He's been not "getting" so many of these "its" for so long, ignoring decades of massive contradictions of reality to his peculiar beliefs, that I have come to think he really does, inside, believe everything he says, even if the outer Sanders is capable of hedging his statements when called out by interviewers.
And while I've never been able to guess why he believes he chose to try to destroy the ACA, instead of say focusing on the tiny issue of income inequality, I'd bet my checkbook he doesn't know the truth of that either.

(58,785 posts)keep his sacrosanct reelections in VT running like clockwork every 6 years, and now someone who applied that philosophy to the 2016 race again to the benefit of the Republicans, it just gets better.
It's not just that Sanders doesn't care about the consequences of throwing VT and now the U.S. to conservatives determined to destroy progressive government, it's also that he never faces the consequences personally. He's one of the privileged elite he claims to oppose.
And his followers each election give him a free ride as the consequences land on their shoulders alone. He literally doesn't count the damage he's done to progressive government as a spoiler and neither, bizarrely, do they.

Sanders clearly resents being asked hypothetical questions that force him to entertain the prospect he might lose. But he faces these questions for the same reason Donald Trump was frequently asked if he would accept an unfavorable outcome: because he has a record of challenging the legitimacy of the outcome when he loses. Only Sanders gets asked this question because only Sanders has ever claimed to have been the victim of Democratic Party rigging, and only Sanders selected a slate of delegates who tried to disrupt their partys convention.
If his answer to Hunt is any indication, he might do it again in 2020.

The White House was stolen from her with Russian interference. She got more votes than any POTUS candidate not named Obama despite:
25 years of GOP smears
The statistical history of a party not keeping the WH for more than two consecutive terms (which is likely why very few Dems threw their hat in in 2016)
Misogyny on both the right and left
The Comey letter days before the election - when she was leading more in the polls.
Russian interference
Voter suppression of democrats in the key swing states in larger numbers than the sliver she lost by.
She performed better than any other candidate could have done. That is what is important. If someone leaves their house and is burglarized, someone doesn't say about the target that "they left the house, and that's what was really important."

This isnt to say candidates shouldnt appeal to young people they must, because our votes cant be taken for granted. In 2016, 18-29 year olds had the lowest turnout of any age group. The key difference between our generation and our parents is that we belong to the Bernie or Bust generation. 2016 revealed that we wont choose between the lesser of two evils; if no candidate inspires us, we will just stay home.
This is why politicians need to appeal seriously to youth voters. Take Sanders: he is nearly 80, yet he is incredibly popular among young people. Why? Not because of his Instagram skills, but because hes perceived as genuine his politics havent changed.
To the 2020 candidates: the key to earning our vote isnt pandering to us. Rather, we want to see that you genuinely care about the issues that matter to us. If you do that, you wont need to worry about spreading your message on Instagram. Well do it for you.

It's amazing that the "the Democrat is the lesser of two evils / don't vote if you're not inspired / this smart Democratic female policy expert is not authentic" 2016 general election Russian talking points took such strong root in this teen when she was only 13 years old.
Someone needs to explain to this young woman that elections have have real consequences that will affect her for the long life that she has ahead. Voting responsibly isn't an optional exercise in response to apocryphal "inspiration". It is a civic duty that she owes to her fellow citizens, future generations, and, most of all, to herself.

(3,855 posts)Sanders did use his influence to get people in the committees to add more progressive positions to the Democratic platform.
(though as many of those progressives will tell you, it was an uphill battle)
But Clinton did at least appear to adopt some of those positions.
Even though during the primary she constantly attacked those positions as "giving everyone a pony"
That was definitely a big problem for Clinton. Many weren't sure what she really believed. Was she really as progressive as she claimed or was she just saying that for the votes Sanders drew into the Democratic orbit?
even with Sander doing over 30 events on her behalf in a matter of weeks, it's understandable there was confusion.
Though I would point out that here Sanders never said Clinton herself was a progressive.

(14,174 posts)Sanderss policy director Warren Gunnels told the Washington Post that the platform is off to an "excellent start" and that "the process itself has been very good."
The Post identified six key victories for Sanders that were later confirmed by the DNCs draft:
Federal reserve reform: The new platform says the party will fight against allowing bank executives from sitting on Federal Reserve boards.
Closing the revolving door: The party will also move to "ban golden parachutes for those taking government jobs" and seek to bar bank regulators from taking any action related to their former employers, according to the draft of the platform.
Wall Street reform: The party would also seek to crack down on Wall Street by severing banks ability to choose the credit agency that rates their products.
Postal Service banking services: "Democrats believe that we need to give Americans affordable banking options, including by empowering the United States Postal Service to facilitate the delivery of basic banking services," the draft of the platform states. (Voxs Matt Yglesias explains that idea here.)
Loopholes for estates and hedge funds: The draft also has strong, Sanders-like language on the need to "immediately close egregious loopholes like those enjoyed by hedge fund managers, restore fair taxation on multimillion dollar estates, and ensure millionaires can no longer pay a lower rate than their secretaries."
Use closing loopholes to create jobs: The Post also notes that Sanderss aide cheered the commitment to put the revenue from closing loopholes toward rebuilding infrastructure and creating jobs.
This is on top of victories Sanders has already won over the platform
These new positions come on top of platform victories for Sanders that emerged from meetings last weekend on the partys platform committee in Orlando. The partys platform had already agreed to move leftward on several issues:
Death penalty: The partys platform also has new language calling for the eradication of the death penalty. "We will abolish the death penalty, which has proven to be a cruel and unusual form of punishment," the platform states. "It has no place in the United States of America."
That's a win for Sanders, who had called for absolutist opposition to the death penalty. (Clinton has backed its use in limited circumstances.)
Earned income tax credit: The 2016 platforms draft language will call on a specific expansion of the EITC to "low wage workers who dont have children and to workers age 21 and older," according to the partys news release.
(The 2012 platform only praised President Obama for expanding the EITC in general, according to the Washington Posts David Weigel.)
Criminal justice reform: Another part of the draft platform calls for an end to "the era of mass incarceration, shutting down private prisons, ending racial profiling, reforming the grand jury process, investing in re-entry programs, banning the box to help give people a second chance and prioritizing treatment over incarceration for individuals suffering addiction."
This is a big change from 2012 when the partys platform had the narrower aim of wanting to "understand the disproportionate effects of crime, violence, and incarceration on communities of color" and expressed a commitment to "working with those communities to find solutions."
Fighting for a $15-an-hour minimum wage: This was a quasi-win for Sanderss forces: The partys platform draft does say that "Americans should earn at least $15 an hour," and it calls for the minimum wage to be increased. But Sanders complained that his delegates didnt get quite what he wanted: a commitment from the party to raise the federal minimum wage to the $15 figure.

(145,303 posts)I was a delegate to the Philadelphia convention and saw how the process works. One key item is that under the rules, a candidate cannot be put into nomination without 300 delegates. https://democrats.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2020-Call-for-Convention-WITH-Attachments-2.26.19.pdf
States in the following manner:
a. Requests to nominate a presidential candidate shall be in writing and shall have affixed thereto the written approval of the proposed nominee and the name of the individuals who shall be recognized to make the nominating and seconding speeches on behalf of a presidential candidate and shall be delivered to the Convention Secretary at a location as specified by the Secretary no later than 6:00 p.m. of the day preceding the day designated for the commencement of presidential nominations.
b. Each such request must be accompanied by a petition indicating support for the proposed nominee signed by delegates representing not less than 300 or more than 600 delegate votes, not more than 50 of which may come from one (1) delegation. A delegate may not sign more than one (1) nominating petition for president and for vice president. Pledged and automatic delegates may sign the petition.
If sanders is frozen out of enough states due to the 15% rule and remaining non-Biden delegates are split among several candidates, there is a chance that sanders may not reach 300 threshold

(9,959 posts)... STOP! You need Hillary Clinton voters to win the nomination. All you need is the last part. "Right now our goal is to defeat Donald Trump. I think I am the strongest candidate to do that. If it turns out I am not the Democratic nominee, I will strongly support anybody else." Just add a compliment about Hillary... say you liked working with her in the Senate and would welcome her support as President. Say she's "tough, smart, a fighter..." whatever... Remember, you need Hillary Clinton voters to win the nomination! When her name comes up, throw her a compliment!

https://medium.com/@blairdurkee/scorched-earth-politics-bernie-sanders-and-the-dishonest-campaign-that-gave-us-trump-eb0bc82ab2c1
Snip~ Its unclear whether April 2015 Bernie Sanders would hate and detest the actions of April 2016 Bernie Sanders, who ran a campaign so sordid and venomous that the soap opera analogy seems quaint in comparison. He did in the very beginning insist on sticking to the issues. But by the end of his campaign against Hillary Clinton, he had called her personally responsible for American deaths in Iraq, accused her of being involved in a money laundering scheme, declared that she was unqualified to be president, and implied she was guilty of bribery and corruption (in a thirty-second ad one might reasonably call negative and ugly).~
Snip~ As we now know, Sanders endeavor to tarnish Clintons image among liberal voters had significant help from Russian hackers sowing discord at the Democratic National Convention and social media trolls spreading anti-Clinton memes and fake news stories. Recently, he even admitted to having known the Russians were helping him and he used it to his advantage anyway. Lesser known by the public, Sanders also received assistance from Republican-affiliated Super PACs and the Republican National Committee itself who were beside themselves with pleasure that Sanders was doing their dirty work for them. This had been publicly reported as early as May 2015, and again, while he did not ask for their aid, he relished it nonetheless. The combined efforts of Bernie Sanders, Moscow, and the Republican Party succeeded in turning Clintons favorable rating upside down.
