LAS VEGAS (AP) Joe Biden said Monday that he's making outreach to Latinos a priority in his Democratic presidential campaign after a news report that his most senior Latina staffer had resigned out of frustration.
Biden told reporters on a phone call that he's spent a lot of time in Florida, California and even Iowa talking to Latinos and has no shortage of concern for or interest in Latinos.
The former vice president was responding to a report in Politico that his most senior Latina staffer, who served as national coalitions director, had quit. The report says Vanessa Cárdenas raised concerns that the campaign focused too much on white voters in Iowa and black voters at the expense of Latino voters.
Cardenas could not be reached for comment.

(9,137 posts)I realize that Joe is a Northeasterner, but if he wants to make sure that Nevada stays in the Democratic column and hopefully flip Arizona and Texas, hed better work hard to ensure that Latinos are backing him.
This is 2019. The political map has drastically changed since 2000. Safe assumptions are dangerous, as Hillary found out in 2016. majority-White states like Indiana and West Virginia are no longer Democratic strongholds.

(9,137 posts)Were not only have to turn out our base, but were going to have broaden our appeal to get enough votes to put us over the top.
Both Texas and Arizona have a LOT of Latinos. Just flipping Arizona would go a long way towards putting Joe Biden or whoever runs at the head of Team Donkey in the White House.

(1,898 posts)This reminds me of the soothsayers prophesying Sanders' doom in New Hampshire when he shuffled the senior level of his Granite State staff this summer. In other words, it was a worthwhile headline but signified next to nothing over the intermediate and long term.

(58,785 posts)for their campaign's Hispanic outreach program. So the Republicans did. Just found that while looking for information on this. Ms. Cardenas is not tweeting on her resignation so far.
Easy to believe Biden's not been investing enough time with that significant bloc of Americans, which is actually several blocs with different issues and behaviors. Most are conservative, voting Republican when they do vote, but with historically low rates; however, that still leaves many millions of Americans. But Iowa and NH are getting a lot more than "a piece of" all the candidates right now.
Ms. Cardenas's resignation is regrettable, of course, but strikes me as..."really?" It's so easy to believe all staffers representing the voting blocs are often frustrated, but these people are all working for a good, decent man who is likely to be the next president of the United States. Walking away from that because she hasn't been able to succeed to her own satisfaction yet doesn't make sense. I'm guessing there's more.
