Joe Biden reportedly denied Communion at a South Carolina church because of his stance on abortion

Former vice president Joe Biden was reportedly denied Communion on Sunday morning at a church in Florence, S.C., where he was making a campaign stop.

The Rev. Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church, told a local newspaper that Biden, who is running in the 2020 presidential election, attended his church’s 9 a.m. Mass. Morey said he denied Biden Communion because of the Democratic candidate’s political stance on abortion.

“Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that,” Morey said in a statement to the Morning News. “Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”

Morey did not immediately return a phone call and email request for comment on Tuesday.

A friend of mine was refused communion in a church in Illinois because someone in the church saw her name on a list of donors to Planned Parenthood. Two weeks later I went home and told my parents I was leaving the church. I now identify as a "recovering Catholic", even have a bumper sticker that says this.

The church is so far behind the times it is impossible to imagine anyone wanting to become a member.

Morey should be sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Joe Biden isn't explicitly "pro-abortion", in fact I would bet he's against abortion. However, he like many other sensible Democratic politicians feel that no one should be denied an abortion if she so chooses to have one. That's why politicians don't say they're "pro-abortion" but "pro-choice".

That's a HUGE distinction. This has come up countless times over the years, the earliest I can remember (although maybe not the first) is when Mario Cuomo articulated this well. He was anti-abortion but left the choice to the individual.

In one article I read, the reason it was mentioned was to show what a priority it was of some of his staff to insure that they could tell him if there was a nearby church that he could quietly attend. The sad thing about that - and the Biden case - is that neither were trying to use going to church as a political event, but as a personal religious attendance. Sad because it showed that they very likely cared.
