Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBeto at Little Rock for Moms Demand Action rally.
Herself and I just returned from Little Rock for the Moms Demand Action Rally.
It was 95 degrees, blazing sun and high humidity.
I was expecting a couple of local Democratic politicians and they were great. There was a high school student who was simply amazing.
When I thought things were winding down, the Arkansas head of Moms introduced Beto - who had not been announced as a speaker.
He really wowed the crowd. His proposal for a mandatory buy-back of assault weapons was particularly popular. If nothing else, he is an amazing speaker who has found his issue with gun violence.
I'm still not convinced he's the right guy but I am, in the words of the old gospel song, "Almost Persuaded."

(185 posts)He is not afraid to take his progressive positions to the other side and see who he can dialogue with and bring over to the light.

(45,677 posts)in his speeches he identifies the "source" of the pain of mass shootings, and says we have to take that fight to Donald Trump.
I agree, a remarkable man, and very persuasive. I don't know if he makes traction; he may simply energize those who are turned off by lack of political progress on the issue of mass murders, and that is not an insignificant contribution. Think about it - Stacy Abrams boosting the central and southeast votes, and Beto free to go wherever he chooses. These are big events.

(11,567 posts)Beto somehow seemed to have more gravitas that I had seen before the El Paso attack. This has sincerely touched him.

(11,567 posts)It was an amazing story. One gun show vendor told Beto that gun sales at such shows should not be allowed. Really bizarre story.
If Beto was willing to stand in the blazing 95 degree sun to talk to 500 or so gun activists in ruby red Arkansas, he really believes it. When the event was over, he stayed longer than his staff wanted talking to students. I was impressed.
