AUSTIN, Texas Beto ORourke said Thursday that he is returning to the presidential campaign trail for the first time since the Aug. 3 massacre of 22 people at the Walmart in his hometown of El Paso, but that the trail wont take him to typical venues in early-voting states.
Instead, ORourke said he is heading to those places in America most victimized by President Donald Trump.
I want to be the kind of leader for this country El Paso has raised me and taught me to be, ORourke said, speaking to a small audience of supporters and broadcast live on C-SPAN. But as we head back on the campaign trail today, I know theres a way to do this better. And that came to me last week.
Someone asked if I was going to be heading back to Iowa, go to the Iowa State Fair, corn dogs and Ferris wheels. And I said, no, I cant go back for that. But I also cannot go back to that, ORourke said. The kind of challenges that we face in this country at this moment of crisis require an urgency, unless we want to reap the consequences of failing to meet them, consequences that we lived and I hope learned from in El Paso on Aug. 3.
And so to those places where Donald Trump has been terrorizing, and terrifying and demeaning our fellow Americans, thats where you will find me in this campaign, ORourke said.

(22,300 posts)Deep fried anything, and attendees from across the state. Most of the candidates will stop by and have fried butter or turkey legs or roasted corn on the cob (a little piece of Heaven by the way) etc. Because our primary is so huge; Beto will not miss this opportunity to work those gigantic crowds. I will be quite surprised if he does not make at least one appearance - the Fair is a month long.
I look to see him at the Fort Worth Stock Show in January which is another event which attracts visitors from across Texas and from other parts of the Southwest. It is a 3 week event with rodeos twice a day. Any candidate showing up has a good chance to be invited to ride in the opening of each rodeo session, or in the Stock Show Parade. I would recommend that those still standing in January visit FW during the Stock Show. Trivia: the Stock Show Parade is the largest parade in the nation which has no motorized units of any kind. Everyone is either marching, on horseback or in a horse drawn vehicle. Lots of crowds in downtown FW.

(185 posts)Going to a state fair would be so inappropriate for him right now. I like that he is following his conscience. Hopefully it will be good political strategy as well, but I don't think anyone knows and I don't think Beto cares.

(22,300 posts)to #45 and all Republican candidates on these issues. He will probably concentrate on Texas at first; I expect him to attend the Texas State Fair to boost his position in our primary.
If there are more atrocities like the camps in other areas, or mass slayings Beto will be there. His position in the rankings really liberates him to push his excellent gun proposals which mirror many of the other candidates' positions.
Other issues he can address are natural disasters or cutting of social safety nets.
He has no Fs to give and nothing to lose. He is NOT running for US Senate, which I expected. If he wanted to run for Senate he would have done so at the beginning.
As a Texan, I am enormously proud of his moral character and determination. If he is not on the ticket, he can be a formidable surrogate across Texas and other states.
