Unlike other Democrats, Pete Buttigieg has no use for Ronald Reagan's legacy

Unlike other Democrats, Pete Buttigieg has no use for Ronald Reagan’s legacy
by Emily Larsen
| July 19, 2019 05:05 PM

Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg, 37, is declaring an imminent end to the era of Ronald Reagan, a break from Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi who often evoke the 40th president while laying out their vision for the future.

“The New Deal era lasted almost 50 years only to come to an end with Reagan,” Buttigieg said in a speech at the Young Democrats National Convention in Indianapolis Thursday night. “That the Reagan era lasted the next 40 years with even Democrats sometimes acting like the only thing you can ever do to a tax is cut, the only thing you ought to do with government is shrink it.”

“The New Deal era ended with Reagan. The Reagan era ends with us,” he said.

Establishment Democrats take a much different tone toward the former president than the South Bend, Indiana mayor, who was born during the first term of Reagan’s presidency.

Buttigieg, unlike older Democratic presidential candidates such as former Vice President Joe Biden, rejects nostalgia for the past.

“Don’t listen to anybody in either party who says we can just go back to what we were doing,” he told a crowd in Des Moines, Iowa in June.

People are more ready to think outside the Reagan box. Sanders problem now is that Buttigieg, Warren and to some extent, Harris are occupying the same lane this time. Either that, or he was born 40 years too early

Something in it might feel true to you, but I see no truth in it in myself or in "other" candidates. Perhaps it might be argued that a scrap of truth in it might apply to our blue dogs -- who are notably at the bottom of the polling; but given what Reagan's legacy is, it's a nasty slur even on those "others."

But of course that's the intention. The Examiner's a RW smear machine, after all.

Reagan was nothing but a sock puppet for conservative hate.

He was a tool, who initially was president of the Screen Actors Guild, but sold his soul to the power brokers and turned into a union busting pos.

He used religion against us all, and tried to convince us all to be grateful for being the recipients of the wealthy's piss showers.

Honestly, he was only a couple of steps UP from turdface.

Nixon, Reagan, W Bush, Trump. What a list of political titans.

I laud Pete for speaking truth to power!

It's the reason he chose to run in 2020, because THIS is the election that will end Reaganism. It will be replaced by either a dystopian Trumpism or a new progressivism more powerful than anything since 1932. There is no middle ground or triangulation. Not this time.

What's worse is that Lane Kirkland, then head of the AFL-CIO supported him. It was a genuine travesty, and is a huge reason why unions have declined steadily ever since.
