Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumFirst round of debates are in the books. Who stands as your current top three?
And is there a change in your top three since before the debates?
1) Warren
2) Biden
3) Castro
Castro is a major change for me. I think over the last month he has shown me he has the depth and qualities it takes. It's really hard for me to pick a #3. I like a number of them. I'm big on Klobuchar, Buttigieg(the guy is ready), Booker, Inslee, Gillibrand and Harris(no particular order).
In my life I have never watched a primary that had so many people I thought could do the job. I think this is the best field I have ever seen in a Presidential Primary.
*In my thread title, should I have used "is" instead of "are?" I'm a grammatical train-wreck. Thanks.

(13,485 posts)"First round is on the books". "In the books" tends toward where one would find the information where "on the books" refers to the information being written. I think the classic use of the phrase comes from writing on a ledger. Either works though.

Everyone else was bringing good ideas to the table but a lot of them came off as one issue candidates. Biden and Swalwell are solid candidates who underperformed. Bennett has good ideas but doesn't have charisma. Ryan was the candidate I didn't know anything about who impressed me the most.
If the next debate cut the field down to 15, I would eliminate:
Gillibrand; Williamson; Yang; Hickenlooper; Delaney
Campaign talking points that need to be voted off the island asap:
- So and so is too old/young/pass the torch/etc. Bernie nailed it. These should be debates about ideas not stirring up bullshit generation gap strife
- "My ideas are from the 'real America', I'm not a 'coastal elite'" - STFU with your right wing talking points
- "We need practical ideas, not socialism" - STFU you clearly don't know the definition of socialism and the right wing is going to call us that no matter what we do. It's not an excuse to dismiss effective health care reform ideas that have a proven track record in most other first world countries
- "I'm a governor, I've done things that the other candidates are only talking about" - STFU Mitch McConnell didn't have veto power over everything you proposed so this is a meaningless boast which just highlights you don't understand Washington politics

(5,255 posts)I put Biden and Harris with a slash separating them because they're so close as far as my preference and because I also think that's a winning ticket. Warren really impressed me with her performance although I haven't seen the whole thing yet. (I found out that MSNBC is re-running both sessions on July 4, by the way.)
No change as far as my preferences going in. I think those three offer the best chance of beating Trump and that did not change.
I agree with you; it's a really impressive field of Dem candidates. Good call.

(12,165 posts)I wanted to be wowed by Biden because I want to be a true believer in the front runner. It's very likely he will be the standard bearer for the dems against Trump. I left the debate worried that he isn't a safe choice at all.
Surprisingly, Williamson had one of the most astute observations of the night. If people would stop making fun of her for a moment they may learn something. She said, and I'm paraphrasing, that what she didn't hear was anyone acknowledge how Trump has wormed his way into the psyche of many people. His toxic hate has taken root. It will take nominee who can mobilize masses of people to counter it.
Mobilizing through love may not be the answer, but I get where Williamson is coming from. Hillary said something similar: love trumps hate. I believe it does. But you can't force the feeling of love.
Every nominee has varying degrees of competency about one thing or another -- some show genius. Williams' genius is knowing how to lead a movement and inspire people.
There are enough people under the spell of Trump and entire countries behind him that will make this the hardest election to win in our lives. The nominee's task won't only be to present the best policies, it will be to charm the people and inspire them to a higher purpose.
Biden can evoke the higher-purpose feeling in his scripted videos with a soaring orchestral score behind him. His campaign launch video was amazing. It will take more than that. I don't know how to get a following going -- Obama does, and I wish he were running. I hear shades of Obama in Buttigieg.
There are people on DU that I look up to and admire that are calling me out when I say something critical of Biden. They don't always do that, of course. Biden has my vote regardless of how I feel today. I'm not asking anyone to earn my vote. The democratic nominee already has it.
But can anyone else relate to the feeling of wanting to believe but not being able to turn a desire to believe into reality?

(1,810 posts)The last week is when I put Warren above him.
The person will never elevate to the level of the staged. Biden, through name recognition, has the opportunity to do more staging than the rest of the candidates. That is a huge positive that carries one major negative. Off the cuff rarely hits the level of staged.
I have been critical of some who have gone after Biden. Never when their concern is clearly legitimate, as yours is here.
I fully agree with you about Williamson. While I wouldn't consider voting for her in the primary I do listen to her. I listened to a stump speech she gave and it was excellent.

(2,231 posts)I've been all-in for both Harris and Warren for a while now, and strong first debates for each has only reinforced that opinion. Beyond that, I'm really not sure. I was really impressed with Castro, but I have serious doubts as to his staying power. Of the other top-tier candidates, I like Buttigieg, but I think his response to the questions re: the death of Mr. Logan showed a lack of experience that will hurt his candidacy. (Let's be clear - I'm referring to his response to the question at the debate, not his overall response to the issue.)
Right now, I would like one of these combinations (in no particular order): Harris/Buttigieg, Warren/Buttigieg, Harris/Warren, or Warren/Harris.
I think the only combination I would NOT like at this point is if someone somehow convinced the relevant parties it would be a good idea to have a Biden/Sanders ticket. I'd still vote for them 1M times over the bloated oompa-loompa currently occupying Hillary's chair, but I would be less than excited about the ticket than just the prospect of ridding us of that s* stain.

(6,626 posts)Happy to see Democratic (and democratic) ideas talked about. I am impressed with almost the whole field, and every one brings valuable perspective. Been thinking, "Here's the start of a great Cabinet, too."
I'd make Inslee Secretary of Climate Resilience, for example.
Seeing such a great team is impressive. The more energy, ideas, and insight this group brings to the American people (and so much less attention given to the Attention Sponge) the better the chances of election in November 2020. I'm in no hurry to finalize any ticket. (And if Voldemort has to split his bullying among 20-something people, the less traction his garbage will have.) Blue wave!

(4,231 posts)happened or really could happen in any of these debates that would allow me to use them for any kind of an informed rational decision. The format does not lend itself to anybody actually being able to lay anything out especially on a complicated issue. So you get 60 second summations/sound bites and you only get that if someone else doesn't interrupt and start bickering. The moderators have basically zero control and allow the rude conduct and bickering to go on because it is good for replays/ratings/ad rates/media personality salaries. As far as really informing a voter that ranks dead last in these fiascos. But I'm sure that some people had their emotions ginned up one way or another and that in the end is what the current system is all about. Sway opinion/decision based on emotion/"feeling" rather than facts and deliberative discussion moderated by people with extensive knowledge in history, foreign policy, social issues and domestic policies. Some of the MSNBC crew are better than others but it could still be way better. A good start would be eliminating Chuck Todd and Donnie D. from any future appearances on TV and bringing in professors/scholars who actually have some depth. I know, I know. Then nobody would watch and America would complain about it's just "too boring" to put in the time before they vote and they don't want to watch because "nothing happens". Notice how MSNBC and other cable networks were constantly playing up this "will something happen/will somebody attack" meme for days on end prior to the "debates" and serving up various scenarios for it to happen.

Warren and Harris are tied for first IMO..
Honorable mention to Castro and Mayor Pete They really
impressed me in the debate
I loved pete's answer regarding the shooting
I loved the strength castro showed Guess he was just flying
below my radar a bit.

(4,341 posts)Not sure why people are ignoring de Blasio, I insist the buffoon will shit his pants when de Blasio looks down on him, plus de Blasio did very well at the debate.
Lets face it, moderators are trying to shape who we elect as the nominee, their questions were asked mainly to whom they consider the front-runners, and we are all being influenced by it...it is a game, needs to change, everyone should have equal time, and that is why I was impressed with Bill de Blasio, he took his chances and did very well, he didn't wait for the moderators, I think he knew they would not call on him.
And because, no matter what we say, I feel the country will no elect a woman, my ticket would be Bill de Blasio, Warren, or Harris as VPs.

(2,412 posts)I am against the idea of our candidates being judged on how quick they are with a two minute sound byte. This is not a game show, folks. I want to judge them on their laundry list of issues and where they stand on each one. While i do want a president who can think on her feet, that is only one quality stacked up against many more of substance.

(7,722 posts)Gravitas is a key factor to go toe to toe with a brazen lying bully, and I believe the other key is to win back the rust belt states. I'm about winning. I love Warren but I'm afraid she won't win because she's a woman and too liberal for middle America and the types of Democrats in my state Pennsylvania, union blue collar Democrats. I know them well.

I live in New Jersey. The nominee will be effectively decided before we have a primary.
This said, from what I read here (top five, not three), probably Warren, Buttigieg, Harris, Biden, and Yang.
The most important issue for me is climate change and the number of the aforementioned candidates are likely to agree with me on this score, since I reject so called "renewable energy," as a practical approach, is zero. It hasn't worked; it isn't working and it won't work.
A practical plan is one that works, and a scientific approach is, if one has a theory and does an experiment to prove it with the result that the experiment disproves the theory, the theory goes and not the experimental result.
High intelligence can best shift gears to embrace reality; something President Obama did when he hired Steven Chu as Secretary of Energy.
Since the current "President" is an ignorant, unintelligent fool, we need high intelligence, something Ms. Warren is said to possess in spades.
Fine minds can and sometimes do make bad mistakes: Regrettably, Obama's worst appointment was the tiresome fool Gregory Jaczko to head the NRC, who thought that nuclear energy was "too dangerous" and, um, fossil fuels, um, weren't. Fossil fuel waste, along with biomass combustion waste, kills 7 million people per year, and nuclear energy, um, doesn't.
Humanity cannot afford another Jaczko, and somehow, I imagine that Warren, who (despite sharing the stage with Markey) is, afterall, the Senator for MIT, might get it.
