USA Today debate recap article-very different take than DU

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2019/06/26/democratic-debate-2019-top-moments-cory-booker-elizabeth-warren/1578101001/

USA today reaches millions of readers, many of whom may not have bothered to watch the debate. Beto actually got the most coverage and since the exchanges were quoted verbatim, he came across a lot better than his attackers did.

Beto has to improve in some areas. but he still has something that others don't which can help him in the long run.

2. I don't see how this is different. That was not an analysis. It was a selection of notable "moments"

It wasn't even a recap.

Sort of like taking soundbytes to avoid actually analyzing a two-hour debate.

I hope you actually watched the full debate because relying only on that piece is not doing you favors.

I also read the comments here on DU gleefully going after Beto. But he got by far the most coverage in this article and sounded great in the quoted dialogue— his attackers not so much. It also was surprising who received no mention in the article

4. It was not an analysis, but a collection of moments. I like Beto and I'm not attacking him

But to point to the comic book newspaper as the lead all "analysis" of this debate is just bizarre.

19. I guess if you support a candidate, it's easy to see posts "gleefully going after" them

That's confirmation bias. We all suffer from it... the human condition and all that.

The posts I'm seeing about Beto express surprise at his performance. His reputation preceded him, and he did not live up to the firebrand role that people were expecting. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is something that Beto and his supporters should listen to.

I hope he stays in the race because I want to see the passionate Beto that people in Texas experienced. It just didn't shine through last night. Sorry.

And take this article and others like it with a grain of salt. It's an opinion piece, not news.

Castro is right and I hope O'Rourke listens. Changing crossing to a civil offense is a step we should take.

"I just think it's a mistake Beto," Castro said. "I think it's a mistake and I think if you truly want to change the system, then we got to repeal that section."

6. Beto is right on this one

Beto just finished a statewide run where the republican attack machine ran non- stop attacks on open borders. It didn’t stick to Beto because Texas knew while he was very welcoming to immigrants he still wasn’t for open borders for the tiny percentage of actual criminals.

In Castro’s attempt to score short term political points, he gave Trump sound bites for the general to play 24/7. Trying to win debate points vs losing the general election for us— not a good move by Castro

"he still wasn’t for open borders for the tiny percentage of actual criminals."

I mean horrible. Void of any actual thoughts of policy, completely deceptive with the use of the phrase "open borders," and yet another cheap shot at Castro.

Keep going with that rw "open border" nonsense.

Listen to Claire McCaskill after the debate on which plan could actually get 60 votes. It is Beto's.

Thu Jun 27, 2019, 11:10 AM

That last night’s debate proved Democrats were the party of completely open borders. Didn’t mention Castro by name but rather tried to brand our whole party. I hope Castro thinks trying to score debate points against a fellow Democrat who has comprehensive immigration plan is worth it if we end up with 4 more years of Trump

no matter who are nominee is, Trump will say they are for open borders. Repeatedly.
His voters will believe they are for open borders, whomever it is.

You're just pissed Beto had a bad night.

13. Beto is actually the big winner because he was shown NOT to be radicallly left
Thu Jun 27, 2019, 10:39 AM
Jun 2019

Biden is going to be a dart board tonight and moderates really need another choice. Beto is moderate enough to appeal to the center and progressive enough not to drive those on the far left to vote third party. It's a shame how gleeful some are at the idea of his candidacy being harmed when he is their BEST chance at beating Trump.
