Speaking from experience as a deaf/hard of hearing person myself... the good ones are professionals, they want to get paid, and rightly so. It's actual hard work. The others are often not very good and when that's the case, it's usually not worth the hassle. Then there's always the "niece who took one ASL class in high school" who ... being honest here... doesn't cut it. The gesture is nice and appreciated but it only makes things painfully awkward for everyone involved and the Deaf person will be shut out anyway. Once in a blue moon a competent interpreter will volunteer but this is rare.
If anyone is taking notes/minutes, share them. Make copies or give the notes for others to make copies. Visual information is key. Oh, and CC for videos are important, if applicable.
If anyone has access to interpreter circles, spread the word about local events in need. I no longer live in the Deaf community so I don't know anybody local.
Have to say though, this OP is a breath of fresh air.
