Bernie Sanders knows a thing or two about obstructionism.
As the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate refuses to consider President Barack Obamas nominee to the Supreme Court, Sanders continues to proclaim that, as president, he would overhaul the nations higher education, campaign finance and health care systems.
But the first year that Sanders held executive office as Burlingtons mayor in 1981 he couldnt even hire his own staff.
He barreled into Burlington as an outsider, and the Democrats on the Board of Aldermen blocked what they could. They fired his secretary. They rejected his appointments without a hearing. The fight went to court, where a judge declined to rule.
Sanders waited, built a volunteer government outside of City Hall and helped his allies running for board seats. Midway through Sanders first term, Burlington voters came out in high numbers and replaced three of Sanders Democratic opponents...
