PRINCETON, N.J. -- Americans again name Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama the woman and man living anywhere in the world they admire most. Both win by wide margins over the next-closest finishers, Malala Yousafzai for women and Pope Francis and Donald Trump for men.
---------
The 10 most admired women are an eclectic mix of political figures (Clinton, fellow 2016 presidential candidate Carly Fiorina, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin), human rights leaders (Yousafzai of Pakistan and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar), and television personalities (Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres). Queen Elizabeth of England and Michelle Obama, who hold largely ceremonial positions in the government, also finished among the leading women.
Clinton Named Most Admired More Than Any Other Woman or Man
Clinton has been the most admired woman each of the last 14 years, and 20 times overall, occupying the top spot far longer than any other woman or man in Gallup's history of asking the most admired question. Since 1993, the year she was first named most admired woman, Clinton has stayed in the news as first lady, U.S. senator, secretary of state and a two-time presidential candidate.
Former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt was named most admired woman 13 times during her lifetime, putting her second to Clinton in terms of first-place finishes. Dwight Eisenhower has 12 No. 1 finishes, the most for any man. Obama, the most admired man each of the last eight years, is now tied with Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan for top overall finishes among men.

(42,862 posts)Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Dec. 2-6, 2015, with a random sample of 824 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.
Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 60% cellphone respondents and 40% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods.

(58,785 posts)she for sure wasn't any Frances Perkins.
This isn't to say I don't like Eleanor Roosevelt and appreciate her contributions, but she was no Frances Perkins, no matter how much the public image conflates the two under her name. There are a number of reasons it's Frances's face we speak of putting on an important piece of currency.

(598 posts)My vote would have gone to Malala. But most Americans polled probably never heard of her.
Time Magazine "Person of the Year" PM Angela Merkel is probably unknown by most Americans.
I once repeated a funny joke about Angela Merkel concerning the World Cup Soccer. Nobody understood the joke because they didn't know who she was.
So, I'd say Hillary wins by default - de' fault of the American people lack of knowledge.

"Least Admired Woman" - Hillary would probably make it to the list of finalists. "And the runner up is..."

But of course, those people are low-information, ignorant...they don't come even close to a tiny group on DU.

They know all about the evilness of Hillary...the rest? They ate all wrong.

(24,324 posts)It is not the real world. It is Americans, who are perhaps the most poorly informed citizenry in the '1st' world. I mean Sarah, Carly and Condi are also on this list and .. and OPRAH !
And 13% is hardly a rousing endorsement.

And if it is worth anything he beat Hillary in the TIME Person of the Year award something like 10 to 1.
She was also below Obama, Trump and Malala Yousafzai, and the Pyuup( as Inspector Clouseau would say).

(58,785 posts)just that nobody paid attention outside Vermont until he surprisingly got himself elected to the national Congress about a quarter century ago. For nearly a decade , he constantly promoted his name to the public, making films of himself, doing speaking engagements, writing innumerable articles for newspapers, as he tried but failed to be elected to office. Then he became a mayor for a decade or so, then went to the House in DC for longer than that, then got elected to the Senate, where he remained pretty much unnoticed, except when pointed out as a "socialist" curiosit, ever since -- until your past few "months."
This stuff isn't secret, Pan. If you're interested in the actual dates, look them up.
