Related: About this forumClinton campaign response to the Sanders lawsuit
"We hope the Court will resolve this matter tonight and the Sanders campaign has access to their voter files right away, with adequate protections of our proprietary information, which we understand could be completed in short order".
"As we stated earlier today, we also want a full, independent accounting of the Sanders campaign's actions, as well as assurances that no data or strategic insight from this act of intrusion will be used by his campaign. This was an egregious breach of data and ethics"

(2,074 posts)The Clinton campaign is not the one that screwed up. The Sanders campaign did. If Bernie and his people cooperate and show that they no longer have Clinton's files, then undoubtedly they will get their access back.
This projection is getting tiring. From the first moment that the news broke that people in the Sanders campaign accessed files from the Clinton campaign, Bernie people have been screaming that it's all Hillary's fault. That is just ridiculous.

(36,418 posts)Didn't this become known after the DNC was notified by the SBS campaign?
Was any data copied other than the search protocols of those who had notified the VAN repeatedly that the firewall was down?
Didn't they document their own activities as a white hat is supposed to when investigating a potential data vulnerability?
If this was a theft of data it's the unlikeliest one I have ever heard of.

Short response is that something like what you describe happened in 08 when Clinton's campaign accessed Obama data on the VAN but then DNC Chair Dean settled it quietly among the parties. DWS was a director of the Clinton campaign at the time so she knew there is precedent for managing this sort of thing but she chose to go public instead.

(1,936 posts)Summaries of data logs provided to the AP show the Sanders team spent nearly an hour in the database reviewing information on Clinton's high-priority voters and other data from nearly a dozen states, including first-to-vote Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Some of these voter lists were saved into a folder named "Targets," according to the logs. Uretsky's deputy appeared to focus on pulling data on South Carolina and Iowa voters based on turnout and support or lack of support for Clinton.

The Sanders campaign employees who accessed the Clinton voter information without authorization appear to have run afoul of the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, said Jason Weinstein, a former supervisor of the Justice Department's computer crimes section.
Those employees "have reason to be concerned about legal exposure," he said, for what appears to fit the definition of illegal hacking.

Here is another source with additional detail:
After one Sanders account gained access to the Clinton data, the audits show, that user began sharing permissions with other Sanders users. The staffers who secured access to the Clinton data included Uretsky and his deputy, Russell Drapkin. The two other usernames that viewed Clinton information were talani" and "csmith_bernie," created by Uretsky's account after the breach began.
The logs show that the Vermont senators team created at least 24 lists during the 40-minute breach, which started at 10:40 a.m., and saved those lists to their personal folders. The Sanders searches included New Hampshire lists related to likely voters, "HFA Turnout 60-100" and "HFA Support 50-100," that were conducted and saved by Uretsky. Drapkin's account searched for and saved lists including less likely Clinton voters, "HFA Support <30" in Iowa, and "HFA Turnout 30-70"' in New Hampshire.
Despite audit logs, Weaver said at the news conference that NGP VAN has told the campaign that no Clinton data was printed or downloaded.

(135,425 posts)It wasn't "just a list of files." It was the material IN the files. The lists of voters, and their degree of enthusiasm re: voting for Clinton.
They did a bad, bad thing. If Clinton's people did this to Sanders, this board would be livid.

(7,078 posts)According to an audit obtained by Bloomberg, Sanders staffers exploited a temporary glitch in the DNC's voter database on Wednesday to save lists created by Hillary Clintons campaign. Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon told reporter there were "24 intrusion attempts" by the Sanders campaign. He and Mook insisted that the Clinton campaign did not take advantage of the bug to look at Sanders' data.
The database logs created by NGP VAN show that four accounts associated with the Sanders team took advantage of the Wednesday morning breach. Staffers conducted searches that would be especially advantageous to the campaign, including lists of its likeliest supporters in 10 early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire. Campaigns rent access to a master file of DNC voter information from the party, and update the files with their own data culled from field work and other investments.

(4,711 posts)You're still not backing that assertion up with anything that proves that it's true. Probably because there isn't any such thing, and the evidence is that Bernie came out of this with 1) restored access to his data, and 2) a big ol' pile of money from outraged supporters. On the other side, Clinton looks slimier than ever, and her little minion DWS will probably be thrown under the bus very soon.
So for having "sabotaged" himself, I'd say Bernie's doing pretty well.

(12 posts)Where is the outrage for the vendor that allowed this data breach to occur? I have yet to see any comment from Clinton that the failure of NGP VAN cause their data to be exposed. That would seem to be the bigger concern so it can be avoided in the future, but by focusing on Bernie and making strongly worded responses like the OP, it is becoming more apparent why the DNC responded the way they did.

Man, Weaver is sure going a long way to make it so Bernie does not have to answer foreign policy questions in tomorrow's debate?
121xGigawatts
(12 posts)Clinton is not outraged though. The Clinton campaign should be very concerned with the failed firewall and the vendors failure to keep her data, and the other campaigns, safe. Her statement only focuses on Bernie and his campaign.
I have had my credit card compromised in the past, and while the person that used it was at fault, I still questioned my bank on why it was compromised in the first place. Ultimately I went to another bank after the second failure to keep my account safe. Should I believe that Clinton is very concerned that her data was accessible by the Sanders camp, but is not concerned enough to question the vendor that made it all possible?
