Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Agree: Screw Internet Freedom, ISIS Is Scary!

Published on Dec 9, 2015

The leading presidential candidates on both the Democratic and Republican side can agree on one issue: freedom of speech on the internet isnít that big of a deal. They basically think terrorism means giving up some fundamental rights. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"Yesterday, we wrote about Hillary Clinton's absolutely terrible plan for undermining both encryption and free speech on the internet as a way to "deal" with ISIS. I left out the worst quote of all that she stated in the process, mockingly:

"Youíre going to hear all of the usual complaints, you know, freedom of speech, et cetera..."
Free speech et cetera? That's handwaving it away. You can see the whole clip here, of the leading Democratic Presidential candidate who will almost certainly win the nomination...

Her full statement:

Youíre going to hear all of the usual complaints, you know, freedom of speech, et cetera. But if we truly are in a war against terrorism and we are truly looking for ways to shut off their funding, shut off the flow of foreign fighters, then weíve got to shut off their means of communicating. Itís more complicated with some of what they do on encrypted apps, and Iím well aware of that, and that requires even more thinking about how to do it.
Shut off their means of communicating? These tools are tools that everyone uses -- and, in fact, which Hillary Clinton herself did a tremendous amount of (good) work helping to spread around the globe as Secretary of State. And now she's trying to cut it all off?Ē*

1. "All we have to fear is the free exchange of ideas."

That would make for a catchy speech.

2. Either they don't understand encryption or they are against free speech.

Can't have it both ways - well maybe with a dumb enough electorate you can pull almost anything off.

"It requires even more thinking about how to do it."

Yeah, it means you stop trying to undermine encryption and look elsewhere to stop terrorism.

Like maybe stop picking fights in the Middle East?

3. wiped? Like with a cloth?

Isn't that what Hillary said about her hard drive? Though we know she's not really that stupid.

5. Yes, with regard to her server.

She was thinking the server that brought her that tomato soup and spilled it, he was wiped with a cloth.

You know, simple mistake.

6. No one is supposed to notice that in August she was "befuddled grandma Hillary" who simply didn't

understand these complex IT questions about deleting computer files, but now in December she's "steely-eyed tech expert Hillary" who is set to offer edicts to Silicon Valley about encrytion how to correct that pesky internet and its annoying "free speech etcetera"

4. Like I said, Christmas is coming. Obviously getting rid of encryption is on some peoples' santa list

and doing away with that annoying free speech et cetera (eye roll eye roll) on teh interwebs has always been on some peoples' santa list, too.

8. terrorism requires leadership

They are pandering to people's fears for political gain and it's disgusting to see.

10. yeah because that's comparable right?

Let's see; one want's to stay on message and discuss what people came to hear at a particular event, and the other just a few months ago didn't know a thing about those pesky computers and now wants to control the internet. Yep, same thing. lol.

Controlling the internet controls the people and the info they can get without the conglomerate of mainstream news outlets.

12. Yeah, but that was "2002-2006 Hillary", and we all know she's not responsible for any of that NOW!
