2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"It's her turn..." I keep seeing people referring
to Clinton supporters saying that. I don't think I've ever seen a Clinton supporter say that. I've seen lots of Clinton detractors claim that her supporters say that, but I can't find a single instance of it.
So, can someone please link to something where a Clinton supporter said it was "her turn?" I'll go check it out thoroughly. My internal DU Google search turned up nothing except people claiming that supporters said that. I could not find a single post where a Clinton supporter said it.
Thanks for your help.

(12,604 posts)Jim Messina, who helped engineer Clintons downfall in 2008 as a senior aide to Obamas campaign, now runs a super PAC devoted to supporting her in 2016. Its her turn and her time, he said on MSNBC this week. Were going to do whatever it takes to make sure shes the president of the United States.

(146,356 posts)That article is from February. She hadn't even declared her candidacy at that time. Nothing more recent? Hardly a meme, I think.

MineralMan
(146,356 posts)tried that one.
I notice that not a single DU link has been posted, though. Only a Jim Messina comment from February in the WaPo. It looks like it's not a common thing for Hillary supporters to say. It sure is common for her detractors to say people are saying, though. Lots of results from searching DU for "her turn," but all are from Sanders supporters. It's an interesting search to follow.
I'm betting this thread sinks like a stone. It's sort of embarrassing, really. Hillary Clinton supporters don't say that. We never have to. She's doing fine on her own merits, it seems.

(8,175 posts)Is that old enough. Look up over your head to the 2nd thread link in post 19.
It's simply her turn.
OK, OK...it didn't say "It's her turn"...I will grant you that.

(146,356 posts)I call them Sanders supporters. But I think you're right. It does appear to be a red herring. I'll stick around, though, to see if anyone can find a DU link with a Clinton supporter saying "It's her turn." I expect crickets.
Personally, I think it's a bullshit claim. She doesn't need a "turn." She's polling 2:1 against Sanders on her own merits. She's earning this nomination.

(146,356 posts)things like "bots" and "bros." I don't think they advance the discussion. I'm funny that way. I consider Democratic politics to be a serious matter, worthy of adult discussion.
You will not see me using slang to refer to any supporter of anyone. It's not my style.

(146,356 posts)Now, I admit that I only went back a few pages in the search results, but every hit on "her turn" was a Sanders supporter claiming that she thought it was her turn or that Clinton supporters said that.
It's interesting. An "exploding meme," I believe. It's a meme alright, but not a meme coming from Clinton supporters. It appears to be solely a Bernie Sanders supporters' meme. How interesting...
Her merits. That's why she's ahead of Sanders 2:1 or more in all of the current polls. Her merits, not "her turn."

"It's her turn and her time," Messina also said. I think she would be the right leader for this country moving forward. And we're going to do whatever it takes to make sure she's the president of the United States."

(146,356 posts)It was from a February, 2015 WaPo article, written before she had even declared that she was running. Is that the best you can find? Where are the DUers saying that? Where are the recent comments saying it is "her turn?"
One link to one story by a political operative. Surely there's more. Sanders supporters are treating it like a constant meme coming from Clinton supporters. I think not. So, please continue your search, but look for more recent usage and particularly on DU.
Good luck with that.

(8,175 posts)It is from HamsterJill, and it says
I believe Hillary will run and that she will be the nominee.
And I think to a very large degree, that was all decided in 2008.
It's simply her turn.
Hamsterjill does not look like she is supporting anyone specific, other than this post
Then there is a second post linked below (24)
This link is to a poster (GMAN) who appears to be a Hillary supporter
Too bad Sanders can't wait his turn in the party.

(146,029 posts)The issue of whose turn it is fits with the GOP but does not really apply to Democrats. If that was the case, then President Obama would not have been able to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primary cycle.
I do not care whose turn it is but I do care about whether a candidate is electable or viable. The stakes are way to high this cycle to let a non-viable candidate be the nominee

(67,782 posts)....the term "it's her turn" isn't true.
I know that a lot of republicans have said the same thing, also bemoaning that false premise.
It's a concoction of their own, maybe a final attempt to change the inevitable reality?

(27,821 posts)... someone saying Sanders can't wait his turn in "the party" is the same as saying it's HRC's "turn" to be president?
That's a stretch.

(14,177 posts)But I have seen people post that it is a BFD for a woman to become president. For me gender is not an issue at all. I don't care it will change my life not one IOTA having a woman in office vs a man if both have the same policy stands.
NanceGreggs
(27,821 posts)... because it will be a first.
If BS were elected president, that would also be a BFD "first", as he'd be the first Jew elected POTUS.
I'm old enough to remember JFK's election being touted as a BFD because he was the first Catholic in the White House.
It is always a BFD when anyone is elected POTUS who represents a group, gender, demographic, or religion that previously would have been considered a barrier to their attaining that office. It will be a BFD when the first openly-gay person is elected, or the first single mom, the first openly-declared atheist, etc.
I agree that gender (or religion, marital status, etc.) should not be an issue in determining one's vote. But you can't ignore the fact that whenever a "first" happens, it is a BFD.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I just don't think it's a BFD. Except for the signal that someone in the group was accepted where maybe they were not before. Oh and I heard Bernie is an atheist. I don't know or care if that is true or not. Again to me not a BFD. His being Jewish I also don't care even if I am half Jewish.
NanceGreggs
(27,821 posts)... but many people do.
To support/vote for a candidate based on what is perceived as a BFD if they are elected is, IMHO, not terribly smart. But to acknowledge previous "barriers" being demolished is.
I remember my mother and her friends/family talking about how JFK was unlikely to be elected because he was Catholic. Nowadays, no one would cite anyone being Catholic as a barrier to their being elected.
I think it's a BFD that being a Catholic or a Jew is no longer a BFD to be considered by voters.

(6,285 posts).... to get that information on whether any Clinton supporter here at Democratic Underground has ever said that, or mentioned "the chosen one" or "the coronation" etc for a while now. So far I've only been met with silence or a one or two word snark such as " bogus". I can only surmise that they are aware that they own them, but continue using those memes unaware that they are only preaching to a complicit choir.
MineralMan
(146,356 posts)and are rarely questioned. They results from this thread prove my point. The only ones directly using that meme on DU are Clinton opponents. Feh!
NanceGreggs
(27,821 posts)... the Snowden supporters (hey, remember them?) who promoted the meme on DU that his non-supporters were constantly posting about his "stripper girlfriend" and "boxes in the garage".
I posted an OP about it, asking for links to anyone citing those memes as facts.
Not a single DUer was able to come up with a link to any alleged anti-Snowden poster mentioning a "stripper girlfriend" or "boxes in the garage".
It is a sad commentary on the state of DU when the idea of "if you say it often enough, it becomes fact" actually leads to posters accepting as "fact" that which never existed.

(30,481 posts)It's the "someone on the internet said" trend. I am not kidding when I say a poster was riding me up and down about corporate media, posted a bullshit link and were called on it, and then said they trusted google. Truly one of the funniest things I have seen here. I believe the actual quote in the middle of an anti-corporate media rant was "I relied on google."
