First on CNN: Clinton meets with Trayvon Martin's family

Chicago (CNN)Hillary Clinton met Monday with a collection of parents whose African-American children have died in shootings at a local Chicago cafe, discussing their loss and outlining her criminal justice reform and gun control plans.

The gathering included members of Trayvon Martin's family and Jordan Davis' family, as well as the mothers of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice.

Martin was the 17-year old who was killed in 2012 by former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman. Zimmerman's acquittal sparked protests across the country. Davis was a 17-year-old African-American high school student killed in a 2014 shooting that started with a complaint about loud music. Brown was the 18-year-old African-American killed in 2014 by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. And Rice was the 12-year-old African-American killed by police in Cleveland, Ohio.

Also in attendance was Maria Hamilton, the mother of Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill man who died after being shot more than a dozen times in Milwaukee in 2014.

http://www.bustle.com/articles/117535-sandra-blands-mother-says-its-what-bernie-sanders-didnt-do-after-they-met-that-earned-her

But it was what Sanders didn't do that earned him Bonner's gratitude.

He did not impose upon Ms. Geneva to ask for a picture of his own. He did not use the moment as an opportunity to promote his campaign. He took no record, he made no statement. He did not try to turn it into a publicity stunt. He simply made space for a sacred moment, and then let it pass without trying to gain anything from it. For that, I respect him. For that, I am grateful. That choice may not have made him a very good politician, but it made him a better man.

Not only did Sanders make no mention of this meeting in the public sphere, but he also used one of the biggest national platforms to finally answer the demand he and Martin O'Malley received months ago at Netroots Nation: He said Bland's name, and in doing so humanized a movement in which he is still working to find his footing. As DeRay Mckesson wrote following his meetings with Sanders and fellow Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Sanders certainly does have a lot of work ahead of him, but he has a "strong initial platform" that reflects his genuine anger about the broken criminal justice system. And, as Colin McEnroe wrote for Salon following the debate, it is perhaps this anger that reflects Sanders' authenticity and makes him appeal to voters.

Some victims were drafted into Gadhafi's unit of private female bodyguards, enduring years of rape and abuse and forced to witness the execution of opponents to the regime.

"Early one morning, we were taken to a closed hall," one former member recalled. "We were to witness the murder of 17 students. We were not allowed to scream. We were made to cheer and shout. To act as though we were delighted by this display. Inside I was crying. They shot them all, one by one."

"The women would first be raped by the dictator then passed on, like used objects, to one of his sons and eventually to high-ranking officials for more abuse," said Benghazi-based psychologist Seham Sergewa, who interviewed victims for the International Criminal Court.

Boys were also forced to serve in Gadhafi's harem. "He was terribly sexually deviant," recalled former chief of protocol Nuri Al Mismari. "Young boys and so on. He had his own boys. They used to be called the 'services group'."
