http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bernie-sanders-dreamer-cesar-vargas_562950fee4b0ec0a3893defaVargas is a co-founder of the Dream Action Coalition, which is led by young undocumented immigrants, or Dreamers. The group has been heavily critical of Republicans on immigration, but has also chastised President Barack Obama over deportations and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, one of Sanders' opponents, over donations from private prison lobbyists
......
The organization did not endorse Sanders (I-Vt.) but praised him in statements Thursday. Dream Action Coalition co-director Carlos Vargas said Sanders "is a strong choice: he is great on immigration in general, stood with us on the border children and he wants to get the Corrections Corporation of America, GEO Group and other corporations out of politics," referring to two major private prison companies.

(30,481 posts)Multiple times for economic reasons. Kennedy, Obama, Clinton and Biden were supportive. They believe the citizenship aspect for over ten million people outweighed the visa issue. Something I agree with. One of the reasons I'm for Clinton. I do not want a pathway to citizenship vetoed because it doesn't make it to the Presidents desk clean. We know well what the house looks like.
That being said people evolve. Vargas is very smart. He isn't doing this against his best interests. Sanders is one of the best out there in this area. This is a good individual pickup.

(27,310 posts)Sen. Bernie Sanders: Thanks for calling. Let me just say this. I'm a strong supporter of immigration reform, and of the need to provide a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. I very strongly support the DREAM Act, and will continue to strongly support it. I very strongly believe, as someone who knows what's going on in the dairy industry in Vermont, that there's no question we need to create a status for immigrant workers in agriculture, and I think the committee is making good progress there.
My concerns are in regards to where we stand in terms of guest workers programs, made worse by amendments offered by Senator Hatch. What I do not support is, under the guise of immigrant reform, a process pushed by large corporations which results in more unemployment and lower wages for American workers.

But far from being treated like guests, these workers are systematically exploited and abused. Unlike U.S. citizens, guestworkers do not enjoy the most fundamental protection of a competitive labor market the ability to change jobs if they are mistreated. Instead, they are bound to the employers who import them. If guestworkers complain about abuses, they face deportation, blacklisting or other retaliation.
Bound to a single employer and without access to legal resources, guestworkers are routinely:
Cheated out of wages
Forced to mortgage their futures to obtain low-wage, temporary jobs
Held virtually captive by employers or labor brokers who seize their documents
Subjected to human trafficking and debt servitude
Forced to live in squalid conditions
Denied medical benefits for on-the-job injuries.

(57,349 posts)They try to make up their own to fit the narrative - Bernie's a racist, anti-immigrant white guy who doesn't care about social justice. They've been pushing that since the day he announced.

But they're not fooling anyone, the selective outrage is obvious.

In 2007, Sanders voted against a comprehensive immigration reform bill because of his concerns around how guest-worker programs impact native workers. Most recently, Sanders joined other Senators calling on the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security and the Labor Department to investigate potential abuses in the H1-B program.

However, Hillary did vote on an issue that could present problems for her, and that is allowing "illegal aliens" to participate in Social Security in 2006.

"This is a new front in the struggle of dreamers," Vargas said in a telephone interview. "We have already graduated from universities, we have made activism for immigration reform, we have been in Congress. Now the dreamers also be part of the 2016 elections. "
Vargas, who signed his contract with the Sanders campaign on Tuesday, said the presidential candidate shares the values of the struggle of the dreamers.
"He has challenged both parties, not just Republicans but also the establishment (D) to ensure that we keep moving forward. What we have done reflects the movement of dreamers, we confront both parties, "Vargas said. "And Sanders is originally from Brooklyn like me, and even studied in high school myself."
His role will include helping some proposals pautar Sanders during the competition by the White House. "One of the main things will work on their platform on immigration and ensure that it is strong, but also work on other issues such as Puerto Rico, the health and education," he said.
He says he has spoken with dreamers in different parts of the nation have said they are satisfied with Sanders, platforms for challenging the other Democratic candidates.
"I think the senator (Sanders) took a step further than others: not only wanted to meet with dreamers because they are good people, as you said Hillary Clinton, but also includes us in his team to ensure that its platform includes the issues and needs of our community, "Vargas said.
