Sanders takes the lead in Iowa, 41 to 40. Within the MOE, nonetheless it's still showing strong momentum for him and further eroding of support for Clinton. Qinnippiac Poll, stand by for link to Time story.

No Diebold machines.
Iowa Democratic primary voters meet in libraries, community centers and school gymnasiums. You caucus with fellow Democrats who are in your precinct. Everyone arrives, divides into camps according to which candidate you support. Then the groups have spirited debates and discussions as people giving speeches about their candidate of choice. Then--people change camps if they so choose (or not), and then voting happens.
Votes are counted by a show of hands. The Precinct Captain counts and recounts--to ensure accuracy. Then, the precinct captain, accompanied by several witnesses, calls in the vote counts to the main precinct.
The main precinct is required to publicize all final vote counts.
You can't steal a caucus.
So proud of our process.
But yeah--I think the establishment probably doesn't know whether to shit or go sailing at this point. I love it. "We The People" are saying that they aren't taking this malarkey any more.

(11,366 posts)If party leaders see a scenario next winter where Bernie Sanders has a real chance at the Democratic nomination, I think theres no question that leaders will reach out to Vice President Biden or Secretary of State Kerry or even Gore about entering the primaries, said Garnet F. Coleman, a Texas state lawmaker and Democratic national committeeman.
Even if none of those Democrats were to announce candidacies this fall, some party officials and strategists suggested that Mr. Biden could be laying the groundwork for an 11th-hour rescue mission during the winter primaries if Mrs. Clintons campaign began to implode. Similarly, Mr. Kerrys friends say they believe he would hear out party leaders if Mr. Sanders appeared likely to capture the nomination and they implored Mr. Kerry, who would have to resign as secretary of state, to try to block him.

I don't think they know how to handle what's hitting them.
And, I think the Republican establishment is in the same boat.

(24,411 posts)I can understanding the DNC and the DLC wanting to hold onto power and continue the corruption and perversion of our nation (and of many politicians in our party).
However, they are really looking like the political keystone cops at this point. Everyone knows that the Democratic establishment decided that it was Hillary's time. They cleared the path to the White House for her, by ensuring that no other viable Dem candidates would run. Fine, we get that.
But now, Sanders is giving them a run for their money. This Biden trial balloon is their Plan B, should Hillary continue to implode. I get that. I don't begrudge them. They've spent years building up their corporate alliances and countless hours at cocktail parties building their power structure--with themselves at the epicenter and "We The People" screwed over.
However, they look like fools. Any run--by Biden (and now they're saying Kerry too?) would be an obvious device to damage Sanders. There are too many in our party who have woken up. We see what you are doing. We're not impressed. We're certainly not fooled.

(62,325 posts)to SOMEONE ELSE? Well if that doesn't tell us all we need to know, iow if WE the PEOPLE make a choice the Leadership will do all it can to negate that choice???
Now, I know what I will do if they do this. I will work ten times as hard for Bernie and if they somehow knock him out of the race with despicable tactics such as they are already doing, I will turn my attention to getting ONLY Progressive Dems elected to Congress and will not support THEIR choice, nor will MILLIONS of other Dems I can almost guarantee that.
Seems like they would rather LOSE than let the PEOPLE CHOOSE!
This Party is more in need of reform than we thought, and the sooner the better.

(17,064 posts)Blatantly protecting the oligarchy's candidate only serves to make her appear weaker. People are waking up to that. TPTB are shitting their pants...the caucuses are the most basic form of democracy, the people speaking up, and that threatens the corporate control of the Party.
