Bernie Sanders: ‘Environmentalists Deserve A Debate’

On Sunday, Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders spoke out about the need for issue-specific debates, saying his fellow Democratic presidential hopefuls should be debating multiple issues, including the environment.

“I think environmentalists deserve a debate so we could talk about how we move aggressively to transform our energy system away from fossil fuel,” Sanders said on CNN’s State of the Union.
...

“Four debates and only four debates — we are told, not asked — before voters in our earliest states make their decision,” the presidential candidate said at the DNC’s summer meeting. “This sort of rigged process has never been attempted before.”

Sanders has been vocal about his acceptance of climate science and his views that the country needs to address climate change during the campaign. Sanders, a senator from Vermont, introduced a bill in July that would make it easier for low-income Americans to install solar power. He’s also said he opposes drilling in the Arctic and offshore drilling as a whole. On Sunday, he reiterated those views.

Debates ignore this issue every single election , at most relegating this important issue to a single short question. There really should be one debate focused on this, much like in the past foreign policy has been a stand-alone topic. .

So they can get a question about tar sands, one on arctic ocean, a question on fracking, one on off shore atlantic drilling, one on conservation, a question on coal exports, etc...

These issues deserve more than five minutes.

This is not the only issue being shortchanged by the process, but it's one of the most important.

Excellent idea Bernie. Now the question is - will it gain any traction?

Every Democrat should be demanding more debates regardless of who we support. After all, 8 years ago Hillary said that a reduced debate schedule is un-American, as her campaign circulated a petition for more debates with Obama. She accused him of just wanting to give speeches, not debate. Why the silence from her NOW?

I just hope that Bernie jumps on the wagon here, and that he joins O'Malley in trying to get more debates, even if they have to break the dumb ass rule the DNC came up with about "banning" those who go to other debates.
