(12,157 posts)So I'm sure they don't know who Madison was and what he thought. The only way to win people over is to speak in terms they understand not what they should understand.

(38,613 posts)He described it, then named it. Anyone paying attention to the speech would walk away knowing what the word means. One of the many reasons this OP is a joke.

(146,288 posts)They speak to their audience in terms everyone will understand. Sometimes, that isn't good enough for those of us who follow politics more closely. It's what works, though. Populism requires speaking to the population in terms that are easy to understand. Not everyone who votes is a political wonk. In fact, few are, really.

See even when Bernie uses big words that not everyone understands, what they do understand is this: he speaks directly and consistently and he doesn't try to hide what he's saying behind a lot of hand-waving phrases. Nor does he talk down to his audience. And believe it or not, Joe and Jane Schmoe notice that stuff.

That's why I don't talk about work with people outside of the industry.

(5,815 posts)"Your arguments are too smart for idiot Americans!"
Wonder if that can be incorporated into a campaign slogan: "Hillary 2016: Because We'll Talk Down To You"
That kind of reminds me of when people complained Obama was being "too professorial" in the way he spoke sometimes.
Didn't particularly damage him, I don't think.

(1,469 posts)called don't talk to cops. the professor gave the 2nd half of the lecture to a 3rd year student, who had been a cop for 20 years, and talked about interrogations or 'interviews' as they call them now
what struck me is, he said 'never talk down to people, you cant insult people' because they wont like or trust you, and they'll just shut down
shouldn't political educators use the same respect that a police interrogator uses?

(3,655 posts)and showed him Bernie's extremist comments from last night and he understood every word. He was an elderly guy around 60 who had no internet. He did not know who Bernie was but was amazed at Bernie's speech giving abilities. He was immediately taken by Bernie and asked what party? I told him and he said he had no interest in voting for Hillary or the Republicans. The friend who I was visiting, was also listening to the speech and now had to watch it too. He follows politics on the internet and newspapers but doesn't do message boards. So I put my tablet on the table so both could watch. Next it was his wife who had to check it out. She was doing something on the computer in the other room. After she listened for a bit she decided to go back to her computer and watch it there.

Hilarious, but not as hilarious as dropping "boston bean + oligarch" into the search function and seeing how MUCH you hate the word (or is it that you hate the concept? Or is it that you are sensitive to Hillary being placed in that category?)
