2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIncredible! Bernie only 8 points behind Hillary in NH
Less than two months ago, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held a 21 percentage point lead over her nearest competitor in the New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary campaign. Now, her edge is down to 8 percentage points over Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Clinton leads Sanders, 43 to 35 percent, in a new WMUR/CNN Granite State Poll, which was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center from June 18 to 24. The poll included 360 likely 2016 Democratic primary voters and has a margin of error of 5.2 percent, meaning Sanders is close to being in a statistical dead heat with the frontrunner.
According to the poll, Vice President Joe Biden was the choice of 8 percent, while former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley drew 2 percent and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb was the choice of 1 percent.
A WMUR Granite State Poll released in May showed Clinton leading Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren 51 to 20 percent, with Sanders at 13 percent. Warren, who has repeatedly insisted she will not run for president, was not included in the new poll. A year ago, Clinton led Sanders, 59 percent to 5 percent.
No wonder McCaskill was spewing verbal flop sweat on Morning Joe this morning!

I wish you the best of luck.
That said...
Lived in Texas a life time or two ago.
And while some of the nicest folks you would hope to meet,
finding a "real Democrat" seems akin to
"Picking fly shit out of black pepper
with boxing gloves on."
Again, that was a while ago, but it doesn't
seem they've leaned anything but right since.

(9,126 posts)By that I mean, a lot of people agree with his stances and wish they could vote for him, but they are afraid he will lose. People like to pick a winner. But if they see that people support him and that he's not "extreme" or "fringe" they will get on board. The big crowds and positive stories are good press. Why else would the Clinton campaign get down and dirty?

(9,126 posts)That's amazing. Here's hoping. I can't believe people are willing to sit outside of the venues just to hear him speak. That's crazy town. I think they're going to be spending a lot of the campaign funds on the stadiums. He should do the Coliseum when he comes to Los Angeles just like the Rolling Stones.

(11,785 posts)It's a lot easier to sell vague feel-good sound bites to people who feel secure. When people don't feel secure and have been burned again and again by politicians giving weaselly answers, someone like Bernie exposes them for what they are--empty suits. I relish the prospect of seeing Bernie debate anyone in the GOP clown car.

(13,184 posts)This poll has a bigger lead for Clinton--56% to 24%--but shows Clinton's support stagnating while Bernie's has gone 6% to 24% in six months. That's not a good trend line for Hillary.
Also, of Bernie supporters, nine out of 10 (89%) said they supported him because of what he stands for, not out of Hillary-hatred.
He beats her on "will take on Wall Street," "will fight for the average person," and "is authentic."
She beats him on "can beat the Republican," "foreign policy experience," and "knows how to get things done in Washington."
Also, 80% think she's going to be the nominee.
I think even where she's strong, she's weak:
More electable, because people think she's inevitable. That could erode fast.
Foreign policy. Her record is not something to brag about and is quite militaristic.
And I'm not sure that being a master of same old-same old politics is so strong either.
Should be an interesting few months.

(36,988 posts)The poll has Sanders receiving the support of 35% of likely Democratic voters while Clinton is at 43%. Vice-president Joe Biden, who has not indicated that he will mount a presidential bid, is at 8% and the former Maryland governor Martin OMalley is at 2%.
The poll has Clinton with a far slimmer lead than she possessed at this time eight years ago. In June 2007 a CNN/WMUR poll gave Clinton a 36%-22% lead over Barack Obama in New Hampshire. Obama won the Democratic nomination.
Sanders has been drawing massive crowds on the campaign trail. Most recently, when he and Clinton appeared with two days of each other in Des Moines, Iowa, the Vermonter drew a bigger crowd. This was despite the fact that Sanders has repeatedly held public events in Iowa while it was Clintons first public rally in the Hawkeye State since announcing her candidacy.
