Are we sure Lindsey Graham is not a little stupid? He sounds as if he is gay making statements like this.
The 59-year-old Republican told the Daily Mail, "Well, I've got a sister, she could play that role if necessary."
He added, "I've got a lot of friends. We'll have a rotating first lady."

Well, at least his presidency would be kinky.

(2,097 posts)Graham wouldn't be the first president to enter the White House without a wife. Jefferson, Jackson, Arthur, Cleveland, and Wilson were widowers when elected, and Buchanan was a bachelor; all had female family members serve as First Lady, and in Arthur and Cleveland's cases that relative was a sister.

(10,270 posts)It's a position appointed by and AT the sole discretion of the Executive (as far as Ive ever known, Congress does NOT have to approve) and it's just easier if youre married to 'in-house' that position, so to speak. If he wanted, he could probably appoint a total stranger if he thought they were qualified. Historically, the job of First Lady has been to oversee the proper running of the Executive Mansion (rather than the office of Government that resides within) so other than the house doesn't look all ramshackle and redneck when State Dinner-Time rolls around, who really gives a damn who he would appoint?
Maybe that was a bit much for such an unimportant and superficial topic, but it needs to be said that if THIS is on our list of shit to actually worry about, I would say we're doing it wrong.
(ON EDIT) Besides, if what we all suspect about Lindsey is true, it's a pretty good bet that whoever he would appoint to do that job, would have FABULOUS taste indeed, so really where's the problem lol?

(8,698 posts)for the clarity. I don't think it is your intention to disparage the concept of a LGBT president but to highlight the hate, fear-mongering and hipocracy of republicans on LGBT issues. What Mr. Graham's preferences are don't matter. What matters are his words and actions on the subject and those of the political party he associates himself with.

(30,247 posts)There have been several presidents who had women in their families act as first lady.
"There have been a number of presidents who did not have a wife to serve as First Lady. The majority of them were widowers when they entered the White House (John Tyler and Woodrow Wilson became widowers during their presidencies, had their daughters or daughters-in-law serve as First Lady until they remarried).
Thomas Jefferson had two women serve as his primary First Ladies. The first was his daughter, Martha Randolph, who came to live in the White House with her father and her family. But she also had duties in the Virginia homes that she ran, and often had to return to tend to those tasks. When Martha was not in Washington, Jefferson called on Dolley Madison, wife of his long-time friend and Secretary of State, James Madison. Even at this time, Dolley reigned regally over Jefferson's table, garnering her reputation as an extraordinary hostess, even before she became the official First Lady.
Andrew Jackson's wife died several months before he became president. He and his wife had no children of their own, but they raised a nephew, Andrew Jackson Donelson. Donelson's wife served as First Lady. Jackson's hand-picked successor, Martin Van Buren, was also a widower when he entered the White House. His First Lady was his daughter-in-law, Angelica Van Buren, a beautiful and vibrant young woman (whose picture can be found hanging in the Blue Room at the White House). She brought a lot of gaiety to the White House after the years of spit-and-fire of Jackson's administration.
Two presidents entered the White House as bachelors. Grover Cleveland's sister served as his First Lady for a short time, until he married Frances Folsom. James Buchanan, however, remained a bachelor his entire life. His niece, Harriet Lane, originally came to live with him in his home in Pennsylvania and acted as his hostess for years before he went to Washington."
