The story, in case you haven't heard:
Rural county commissioners discuss seceding from Colorado
http://kdvr.com/2013/06/06/rural-county-commissioners-discuss-seceding-from-colorado/
A group of county commissioners say they are pursuing a plan to secede from Colorado and create a new state because they feel the Democrat-controlled state legislature is not representing their way of life.
Sean Conway, a commissioner in Weld County, is leading a charge to ask voters in November whether to form a new state.
I know you think, wow, this is crazy when you first hear about it, but then you realize that five of our states Vermont, Maine, Tennessee, Wyoming and Kentucky came about in this fashion, and the circumstances were very similar to what were going through now, Conway told FOX31 Denver Thursday afternoon.

(40 posts)It's been a while, but that is how many states were created. The Virginia/West Virginia split was done for similar (political differences) reasons..

(60,060 posts)The VA/WVA split is pretty much unique in US history, and it took the Civil War to make that happen.
Sure, many states were created out of larger territories, but there haven't been many states broken up to make smaller ones.

What is now the state of Maine was, before statehood, called the District of Maine and belonged to Massachusetts.
The thing is, it is unconstitutional to break up states without congressional approval.

Dozens of Weld County residents presented commissioners with a letter Wednesday morning, asking them to reconsider the decision they made more than two years ago to ban emergency contraceptives like Plan B in county clinics.

We have a few DUers from Weld County, CO--my dearest sympathy).... the only hope is growth that brings in a critical mass from elsewhere to dilute the crazies.

(28,598 posts)I know that from personal, on-the-ground experience. And the Weld Co. political establishment is comprised of a bunch of money-addled fools. Guns and agriculture play a part in all this, but it's hydrocarbon-driven, at its center. I hope measures are in place to crush this movement, and sooner rather than later.

Not disagreeing with you, just remembering the state of Franklin (in now tennessee)
The State of Franklin was an unrecognized, autonomous "territory" located in what is today eastern Tennessee. Franklin was created in 1784 .. It was founded with the intent of becoming the 14th state of the new United States.
Aug 23, 1784, delegates from the North Carolina counties of (xxx) convened in Jonesborough and declared the lands independent of North Carolina
May 16, 1785, a delegation submitted a petition for statehood to Congress. Seven states voted to admit what would have been the 14th federal state under the proposed name of "Frankland". This was less than the two-thirds majority required under the Articles of Confederation.
After the failed statehood attempt, Franklin operated as a de facto independent republic
Franklin was never admitted into the union. The extra-legal state existed for only about 4 and a half years, ostensibly as a republic .. 1786 was the beginning of the end of the small state, with several key residents and supporters of the state withdrawing their support in favor of a newly interested North Carolina https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Franklin
