TOM KLUDT 9:18 AM EDT, FRIDAY MAY 24, 2013
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) issued a statement Thursday to express his disapproval of the decision by the Boy Scouts of America to end its longstanding ban on gay youth. The BSA's ban on gay adults serving in leadership positions remains in place.
Perry, a former Boy Scout, said that the new policy "contradicts generations of tradition in the name of political correctness."
"The Boys Scouts of America has been built upon the values of faith and family for more than 100 years and today's decision contradicts generations of tradition in the name of political correctness," Perry said in the statement. "While I will always cherish my time as a scout and the life lessons I learned, I am greatly disappointed with this decision."

(44 posts)I was an Eagle scout and I am thrilled with this decision. Too bad Rick Perry remembers nothing of the scout motto, and I think the "help other people at all times" part does NOT mean praying to God instead of sending emergency crews to put out a wildfire.

(30,058 posts)Continue your policies to your base but you are wrong. Wrong on setting up health exchange with so many uninsured in Texas but again the national health exchange will probably bring on a national health care system. Get over yourself, YOU WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT, OOPS doesn't cut it. You are not right for Texas and surely not right for the USA. You cry seceed when this was under a 1835 treaty when there was another signed after the Civil War and besided this when the tragedies in West and Granbury you call out for disaster relief. If you can not handle these times without other help you don't need to secede.

(15,394 posts)I'm still not a big fan of the BSA since they're essentially a religious group in that you still have to officially believe in God, and they're pretty much controlled by the Mormon church, and tax dollars and services go to support them.

(94 posts)Oh, yes, the bigot tradition, that originally segregated troops by colour. The BSA got over contradicting that one.
Scout Oath (or Promise)
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
Scout Law
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
brave, clean, and reverent.
It says morally straight; nothing about sex.

I'm sure it's been said before, but the fact that Perry is wearing what looks to be Heath Ledger's Brokeback Mountain jacket, and the fact that he choose music from a gay composer, makes the whole ad hilarious for me.

(1,400 posts)...is that the ban is still in place for adults, making it unlikely they'll ever let him be a scoutmaster
