2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe gloves are off. I couldn't be more proud of our President than I am right now.
And to all you trolls and haters -
let me remind you what you once told me:
GET OVER IT!!!!
It's going to have to take something big, something unforeseeable for Romney to win in November.
gateley
(62,683 posts)trot his sorry ass out again in 2016 and give it another try. After all, this is the farthest he's come in his countless attempts.
I can't imagine how it would feel to know that YOUR PEOPLE DON'T REALLY WANT YOU.
Anyway, I agree that no way will Romney win in November. And I don't think it's just because he's so disliked. I think, little by little, more and more people are realizing that Obama HAS been able to turn this around in the right direction and started the long march toward "recovered".
I'm proud of our President, too.

(44,124 posts)It is really going to be insane.
And I promise you Rove and the Kochs will pay trolls to infest DU, telling us that Dems are the same as Republicans and we should stay home or write in some impossible candidate.

(28,151 posts)Just sayin'.

(50,566 posts)He probably already has all the votes in the can, too.
We'll be in for a fresh Bush hell. The Supreme Court will see to it.
gateley
(62,683 posts)WHY Jeb is perceived as their Savior. The Bush name stinks (they're afraid to even WHISPER W's name), and even if he was liked in FL, to the rest of the country he's still a Bush.
Yet people, press, everybody brings up his name as though he will come swooping in to save the day for the Republican Party.
Do you understand why?
I've never gotten a good answer on this.
TIA if you have any idea and can enlighten me!

(50,566 posts)He's got a few more brain cells to rub together than Dubya ever did and Bushco. and their connections have been trying to make him seem inevitable for years. Of course the media goes right along with that.

(8,419 posts)Had the sound off and walked by when it first came on, he looked pissed/stern. Twenty minutes later walked by and looked the same so I turned the sound up. If the whole thing was like the last ten minutes then he laid them out!
Make a choice America!

He did not mince words.
Hopefully C-Span will rerun it so you can see the whole thing.

No tv here...
I take it the speech was ...stern?

(24,096 posts)and for him to stand up under that enormous weight with the grace and intelligence that he has, is just amazing. Anyone else would have cracked by now.
We are truly fortunate to have this man leading - and for those here who want him out of office just for spite or whatever they call it here now - I think of Santorum and how much they would like him.

That was just too easy
I think Obama is super in a lot of ways - and many feel like that.
but some like to identify with the evil villain scumsuckers that want to tear him down. Always those sorts around, the unhappy camper boo boo people that nothing is ever ever good enough for.
jillan
(39,451 posts)I think we will see more of the Obama we want in his second term.
He is a great President especially if you compare him to the alternatives.
zipplewrath
(16,646 posts)I suspect we'll see much more of what we've already seen. One has to be fairly uncharitable to him to suggest he hasn't been accomplishing much of what he has wanted to accomplish in his first term. Second terms are always a bit "different", and of course the up coming supreme court case could put alot of things into turmoil. But if there is a common theme among second terms it is probably "solidifying gains". He'll try to "close out" Iran. He'll try to wind down Afghanistan. He'll try to formalize the military commissions. He'll try to populate the consumer protection agency he formed. He'll try to get as many health insurance regualtions written as he can, as well as get all the exchanges up and running. He'll continue to try to get deficits down, probably by making deals on tax cuts and entitlement programs.
His bigger problem this time will be that he has roughly 2 years to do it all. After that, the whole "lame duck" thing really starts to kick in because he's percieved as having "no coat tails".
I wouldn't expect much movement on climate change, or unionization, or Gitmo. He's not going to prosecute anyone from the Bush Administration. He'll test the winds on DOMA and will be open to change if the support is there. He's going to continue to move in the same direction on education reforms. And he's done about all he's going to do on health CARE reform, unless the Supreme Court forces his hand.

I missed a large portion of it, so want to see it again. Riveting, really - there will be people screaming that he 'over-reached' but all he said was the plain damn truth. and he said it well.
jillan
(39,451 posts)considering this is an election year - Yup!
And President Obama just ripped the gopers apart.
Their sworn mission is to make him a one term President, they have done everything within their power to block any legislation he has tried to get through, they have a 24/7 hate machine working against him and he's partisan. If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious.

Mitt Romney on the other hand is a pathological liar. Seriously, just ask yourself where R'Money stands on the issues. Still can't figure it out? Welcome to the club. Romney has flip-flopped on just about every issue abortion, immigration, healthcare, civil rights you name it. The Flip-Flopping liar changes positions more times then a pornographic movie queen.

I realize his style is based on a rational theory that we all behave as thinking and rational people. But he has finally realized that the GOP are anything but rational. He realizes they are political animals that promote the interests of their monied contributors rather than Americans.
Good for you Mr. President. I stand with you.

He's like a 1% Ken Doll. Occupy is going to come back full force by May and he is going to be our poster boy. They could not have handed us a more perfect choice. And we don't even need to go into where he was born or what his religion is. He's toast in this climate.
Boy, President Obama can just phone this one in. Welcome to your next four years, Mr. President.
