As to the humor content of the OP, I find it humorous; and true; and a sad commentary on the state of our country.

started bleeding age 6.....deteriorated over the next 13 years....major loss of blood, excruciating pain, social ostracism and more. Finally, major surgery (in the nick of time. Few more days and I would have died of a ruptured bowel) and waking up to a permanent bag. At the age of 19. Which no one told me would be the outcome. Eeeeek!

I admit I find bowel problem jokes a little difficult.

and sometimes being reminded of the the torture triggers me. Which is what just happened to me.....and above, probably to sarcasmo.

Sometimes people get triggered, and honestly, it may be hard to be compassionate but they probably need it.

Close to my daughter's story - UC at age 4. She didn't end up with a bag at age 19; she got primary sclerosing cholangitis. She'd trade in a heartbeat -and she'll likely end up with a bag anyway. Her current colon cancer risk (at age 22) is 25%.

It's such a cruel disease, not to mention the humiliation factor. Too many shitty *ahem* stories to tell. Kids and adults are cruel and fucked up--I'll just leave it at that.

My heart breaks for you and your daughter. Truly.
There's a website called IBDSucks.com. Maybe it would be helpful.

What is Sclerosing Cholangitis? I developed side effects, like pseudo arthritis, which paralyzed me with pain one summer, not long before the surgery. In those days, they didn't tell the patient much and my mother was mentally ill..didn't discuss anything with me, so I don't know much of the details. At least being stuck in the bathroom all the time gave me some moments of protection against her. She was violent and unpredictable.

I always thought the stress of being trapped with her was the cause of my disease.
Now I think it's all karmic.

70. Literally, scarring and inflammation of the bile ducts
Tue Dec 11, 2012, 03:13 AM
Dec 2012

It is likely an autoimmune disorder, and the scarring of the bile ducts ultimately destroys the liver. A small percentage of people with IBD (especially UC) also have PSC - but about 85% of people with PSC have IBD. She will likely need a liver transplant. It also puts her at risk for cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gall bladder cancer, and acts as an exponential multiplier of her risk for colon cancer - currently around 25% because of the combined effects of UC and PSC). Once you're diagnosed with both you get a colonoscopy every year. No good screening tools for the first 3 cancers that can catch them at a treatable stage. No medical treatment for the PSC itself (only the surgical one - and only once the impact of living with an impaired liver is more hazardous to her health than living with someone else's liver).

It sucks. The "good" news is that having both often means the UC is easier to keep under control Sort of like your "good" news of being trapped in the bathroom giving you a break.

Sorry about your wife. Have you looked into "Leaky Gut Syndrome"? I know a woman personally who recovered fully from Early Onset Dementia by healing her gut. I've heard the outcomes are not as positive in later stages. Just FYI.

when you're deep in the heart of dementia with someone you love, it's pretty overwhelming and may be hard to see the funny in a post like this.

The person most beloved to me in the world....my grandmother......died of Alzheimer's in 1973, when few people had heard of the disease. She was the person in my life who was always in my corner, standing up to her daughter (my mother) when she and my father were mean to me. She was my "person."

Perhaps I'm just further distanced from her death, though hers is the picture you'll find throughout my house and she remains absolutely beloved by me and always will.....I think it's funny.

But your reaction is, indeed, understandable. Not everyone who is in your place reacts the same, so others whose loved ones have dementia saying they think it's funny just don't have the same reaction as you. Doesn't make yours wrong.....at all.

Hugs to you and your wife.

THEY are the ones who hounded her to death, not the two DJ's who aired a two minute phone call and moved on to their next segment.

Stupid, purile, their prank may have been a lot of things but I doubt very much that there was an iota of maliciousness to it.

What the tabloid media did to the nurse, WAS malicious, it was copy at any cost.

And what has followed her death is the distilate essence of maliciousness. "THEY MUST BE MADE TO SUFFER FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE." Seems to be a fairly common mantra. People WANT to see them suffer and express actual pleasure at the thought of that suffering.

However, absent a clear intent to do harm, or equally clear disregard for FORSEEABLE harm, I don't believe the jokers should be held responsible for what are clearly the consequences of a third party's actions, regardless of the fact that that third party could only act in the wake of the initiating action.

Whether you realise it or not, what you are essentially saying is, once the first bully starts in on a victim, other bullies, whilst not quite free to lay in with impunity, enjoy at least a limited amount of diminished responsibilty, because they're only following up on the initial act of bullying.

There is an ad that plays on the various progressive radio shows, it's regarding premature birth. What bugs the hell out of me is that she pronounces "pregnaNcy" as "pregnacy." She's a doctor, for chrissakes, and well educated, what gives with that? It's like hearing a realtor call themselves a realAtor. Sheesh.

One could add that: "Excessive viewing of Fox News can make one vote against one's own best interests."
