(5,214 posts)While her condition is anything but funny, there are so many environmental causes of dementia, including a strong genetic link.
As to the humor content of the OP, I find it humorous; and true; and a sad commentary on the state of our country.
I see your DU name and wonder WHAT you do find funny and/or sarcastic.
Jus saying.

(20,219 posts)started bleeding age 6.....deteriorated over the next 13 years....major loss of blood, excruciating pain, social ostracism and more. Finally, major surgery (in the nick of time. Few more days and I would have died of a ruptured bowel) and waking up to a permanent bag. At the age of 19. Which no one told me would be the outcome. Eeeeek!
I admit I find bowel problem jokes a little difficult.
and sometimes being reminded of the the torture triggers me. Which is what just happened to me.....and above, probably to sarcasmo.
Sometimes people get triggered, and honestly, it may be hard to be compassionate but they probably need it.

(20,219 posts)It's such a cruel disease, not to mention the humiliation factor. Too many shitty *ahem* stories to tell. Kids and adults are cruel and fucked up--I'll just leave it at that.
My heart breaks for you and your daughter. Truly.
There's a website called IBDSucks.com. Maybe it would be helpful.
What is Sclerosing Cholangitis? I developed side effects, like pseudo arthritis, which paralyzed me with pain one summer, not long before the surgery. In those days, they didn't tell the patient much and my mother was mentally ill..didn't discuss anything with me, so I don't know much of the details. At least being stuck in the bathroom all the time gave me some moments of protection against her. She was violent and unpredictable.
I always thought the stress of being trapped with her was the cause of my disease.
Now I think it's all karmic.
Ms. Toad
(34,122 posts)It is likely an autoimmune disorder, and the scarring of the bile ducts ultimately destroys the liver. A small percentage of people with IBD (especially UC) also have PSC - but about 85% of people with PSC have IBD. She will likely need a liver transplant. It also puts her at risk for cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gall bladder cancer, and acts as an exponential multiplier of her risk for colon cancer - currently around 25% because of the combined effects of UC and PSC). Once you're diagnosed with both you get a colonoscopy every year. No good screening tools for the first 3 cancers that can catch them at a treatable stage. No medical treatment for the PSC itself (only the surgical one - and only once the impact of living with an impaired liver is more hazardous to her health than living with someone else's liver).
It sucks. The "good" news is that having both often means the UC is easier to keep under control Sort of like your "good" news of being trapped in the bathroom giving you a break.
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)That really does suck.

(53,661 posts)I agree with the poster who says some are looking for a fight. Now that the GOP candidate for POTUS is vanquished, some are going after fellow Democrats. The GOP threat isn't over, with the war or women, unions, schools, the social safety net and the environment. We've got climate change and other things to focus on, instead of julienning DU members.

(3,011 posts)Fox News is only one cause. Since you know that this was not an attack on your wife or any of the other people who are suffering from this terrible condition, please try not to take it personally. We can still reflect on how fox causes brain damage and other afflictions with humor.
Sorry about your wife. Have you looked into "Leaky Gut Syndrome"? I know a woman personally who recovered fully from Early Onset Dementia by healing her gut. I've heard the outcomes are not as positive in later stages. Just FYI.
Take care.

(1,628 posts)I'm sole caretaker for my father, who is now in the first stages of Alzheimer's. I've been involved with their declining health for the last 15 years and have had them living in my house for the last 7. That wasn't and isn't funny, but this OP is.
Edited to ad: You need to find your sense of humor or you won't make it through the hard times you're having now. Believe me, I do know what I'm talking about.

(3,927 posts)when you're deep in the heart of dementia with someone you love, it's pretty overwhelming and may be hard to see the funny in a post like this.
The person most beloved to me in the world....my grandmother......died of Alzheimer's in 1973, when few people had heard of the disease. She was the person in my life who was always in my corner, standing up to her daughter (my mother) when she and my father were mean to me. She was my "person."
Perhaps I'm just further distanced from her death, though hers is the picture you'll find throughout my house and she remains absolutely beloved by me and always will.....I think it's funny.
But your reaction is, indeed, understandable. Not everyone who is in your place reacts the same, so others whose loved ones have dementia saying they think it's funny just don't have the same reaction as you. Doesn't make yours wrong.....at all.
Hugs to you and your wife.

There's no right or wrong way to do it. But sometimes in this site the admonitions to walk on eggshells gets really tiresome. Few people on this site aim to seriously injure anyone and it's just as inappropriate to make that assumption. --!not that that's ejst you did. You only asked the question. .

(536 posts)This is like anyone blaming those idiot DJ's for the British nurse offing herself (I know, I'm sure someone's 3rd cousin committed suicide and takes offense to such flippant terminology). How sterile are we going to have to be? Jeez, I mean Shephard Smith is only an asshole 99% of the time, so should we apologize for 'broad brushing' the whole network? If one is that sensitive, maybe one should veer from this site (or maybe the internet altogether).
plethoro
(594 posts)committing suicide? Interesting... I do and will be donating to a fund to help them atone.
TheMadMonk
(6,187 posts)...and continued the public humiliation of this poor woman until she killed herself.
THEY are the ones who hounded her to death, not the two DJ's who aired a two minute phone call and moved on to their next segment.
Stupid, purile, their prank may have been a lot of things but I doubt very much that there was an iota of maliciousness to it.
What the tabloid media did to the nurse, WAS malicious, it was copy at any cost.
And what has followed her death is the distilate essence of maliciousness. "THEY MUST BE MADE TO SUFFER FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE." Seems to be a fairly common mantra. People WANT to see them suffer and express actual pleasure at the thought of that suffering.
plethoro
(594 posts)To me, it's two DJ's pretending to be something other than what they were. Knowing and willing maliciousness notwithstanding, I hold these two responsible for what ultimately happened. But, then, I understand people have different value systems. I'm following the case closely and will do whatever I can to help the departed woman obtain justice.
TheMadMonk
(6,187 posts)...it highly unlikely she would have killed herself.

(594 posts)care for these types of contacts by persons simply playing jokes. Even the Sarah Palin one I didn't care for, even though Palin disgusts me. These kinds of things did not happen during my formative years when I was developing an understand of right from wrong. So maybe you are right about the suicide cause; I don't know. That said, it will not upset me if these two DJ's never practice their craft(?) again. TTYL, MM.
TheMadMonk
(6,187 posts)However, absent a clear intent to do harm, or equally clear disregard for FORSEEABLE harm, I don't believe the jokers should be held responsible for what are clearly the consequences of a third party's actions, regardless of the fact that that third party could only act in the wake of the initiating action.
Whether you realise it or not, what you are essentially saying is, once the first bully starts in on a victim, other bullies, whilst not quite free to lay in with impunity, enjoy at least a limited amount of diminished responsibilty, because they're only following up on the initial act of bullying.

Mon would be looking all over the house, under things, on top on things for something. She was not wearing her glasses and we would just look over her head and she would start laughing. They were on top of her head.

Dear Goddess,
Please bless all of the afflicted, the families and the friends of those with any type of dementia. I worked ten years in our veterans' home and loved the Alzheimer's unit best. My mom and dad both had diminished mental faculties when they passed. I never loved any of them less for not being fully functional. Please look after the feelings and hearts of those who suffer the torment of a loved one who no longer recognizes them. Bless them with understanding and hope.
