2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRelax. The President's a smart man.
He tells Comey he'll publicly vouch for him that he wasn't intentionally trying to interfere with the election if on November 9th, or very shortly thereafter, he tenders his resignation from his position, citing the change in administrations as a logical point in which to spend more time with the family.
That way Comey saves personal face, Hillary doesn't have to fire him in an ugly Saturday Night Massacre event, and he doesn't have to fire him in an ugly incident that might bog down the last few weeks of his administration a la Marc Rich. Everyone walks away happy.
I guarantee that's what's happening here.

(9,148 posts)OR Pres could just relieve Comey of his duties now citing the fking mess he caused & leaving the FBI in the shitter.
Then Obama could immediately appoint a new replacement until Comey's come clean about his appearance of collusion. One who will rip the fascist snakes from the FBI and replace them all with more honorable people. Then go after Chaffetz, Gowdy & their RW fuckers of freedom.
It could happen overnight if he wanted to.
As President, Hillary would begin her next four years without having to drag the Comey mess with her.
Get on with it already. DO IT!!

(2,495 posts)Based on 8 years of getting to know the man, Obama really does believe in the separation between Justice/FBI and the presidency. He's not lying when he says he hasn't been briefed and hasn't discussed the matter with Comey. He honestly believes Comey isn't intentionally interfering in the election. He also honestly believes in the norms and rules that suggest Comey made a mistake. Because he believes in the integrity of the presidency he can't have his press secretary say so, but he can have him strongly express his commitment to those norms.
As to Comey stepping down, it is unlikely unless something major were to be uncovered. Obama, however, really means it when he says any investigation of Comey would be in the hands of the DOJ and have nothing to do with the president.

Only an arrogant partisan idiot would use the middle finger to answer. he could go down very hard, and in a way that won't give him much political future.
