2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt appears that Comey broke FBI policy.
A tweet from Norm Ornstein to noted Harvard law professor Jack Goldsmith:
Jack, is Jeff Toobin correct that it is FBI policy not to release controversy information within 60 days of an election?
Norman Ornstein added,
Jack Goldsmith @jacklgoldsmith
Exactly. 😀 https://twitter.com/normornstein/status/792126822678925312

(2,056 posts)And I have a feeling that someone in the FBI with ties to Trump and his ilk were sitting on this and took it to Comey now to try to impact the election.

(28,270 posts)Comey's BS letter was the republicans 'October Surprise'!
Didn't one of drumpf's kids say they had something up their sleeve a day or so ago?
And here it is! Don't tell me that Trump didn't know ahead of today about this crap!

(1,999 posts)Probably won't though, Dem officials would be too scared of being accused of "politicizing" things even though Comey politicized it.

(937 posts)Comey was either affected by republicans criticism or he is a partisan hack
okaawhatever
(9,478 posts)surveillance order when Ashcraft was in the hospital. He thought the spying under Bush was unconstitutional. I believe the story is in Wiki or some other source. He also was questioned by Congress as to whether he thought the Attorneys General firings under Alberto Gonzales' were politically motivated and he said "yes".
I'm really wondering what Comey's position on this is. He's gone from being Republican to an Independent probably due to Trump.

(14,579 posts)This asshat was knee deep in whitewater.
Just because he had a spasm of humanity in one moment doesnt mean he isnt a clinton hating hack.
He either a moron or didnt know the cosequences of going out of procedure and the bullshit he spewed 4 months ago and wrote today ir he purposely teed up the gop and media to slam hillary.
He isnt a moron.
okaawhatever
(9,478 posts)sort of blackmail or something like that. He wasn't afraid to burn the GOP in the past when the stakes were much, much higher. Besides, he easily could have charged Hillary and had a much greater effect on the campaign. These things don't add up. I think we'll find it's something else, maybe something coming from a third party.

(14,579 posts)That he didnt set himself up for a career ending disastrous effort to try to prosecute her doesnt mean he isnt a clinton hating hack.
okaawhatever
(9,478 posts)interfered with the election. I think he sucks and I would throw him in jail if I could. That being said, Comey can be doing this for ego, blackmail, pride, who knows. He hasn't shown that kind of party loyalty in the past. I still think his motivation is something other than loyalty to the GOP. I also wouldn't be surprised If some hackers from Russia played a part in all this.
Claiming he is just a partisan hack for the GOP closes the door on a third party being involved. When Hillary is President, we need to have a Senate investigation into the letter Comey wrote. I think that may be the next Watergate.

(14,579 posts)You are making it WAY more complicared than it is.
Did you watch his hatchet job on hillary four months ago?
No one had a gun to his head there, he has very real and genuine disdain for her and bill, the standard gop clinton hate
Again, HE WAS A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR FOR THE WHITEWATER SENATE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATION. that is what he cut his teeth on. He did the dirt on them 20 years ago, hes doing it again.

(12,645 posts)since he "promised" them he'd continue to investigate should other information come to light.
He made a decision to value his reputation with Publican committee chairs above protecting the integrity of the electoral process. Had he done otherwise, he might have been forced to resign by these Publicans, once the e-mails came to light after the election.
In my opinion, that would have been the honorable thing for a Publican appointed by a Democrat to do.

BSdetect
(8,999 posts)telling them that there was no suggestion of foul play in his opinion and to keep this quiet. And send to all committee members - not just republicans.
If he really had to release any news that is.
So he found out that morning and releases a statement without checking sources etc etc Sounds like a potential Putin puppet.

(23,978 posts)i think, long term, this will actually help HRC win.
1. nothing new or incriminating was released/reviewed/whatever
2. imagine if Comey had followed FBI policy and sat on the info, then it leaks while HRC is serving as POTUS. the GOP-led house would almost certainly push for perjury charges against Comey, and try to find a way to tie HRC to his alleged violation of law in deference to FBI political policies.
3. it adds to the "crying wolf" ambiance that has surrounded the email accusations of late.
i do think HRC needs to get a new FBI director and i'd bet Comey's gotten damn tired of it all by now anyway.

(4,642 posts)how can anyone be charged with perjury for something that happens after the fact even if he did say he would inform the committee of any new investigations.

(4,423 posts)and apologize for this reckless nonsense. These are most likely duplicate emails, the theater here is to try and disrupt Hillary's momentum.
