Again and again during the vice-presidential debate, Republican nominee Mike Pence prevaricated about the statements and policies of his Donald Trump, his own previous remarks, and sundry other topics.
His dogged refusal to defend any of Trumps outrageous statements indeed, his determination to distance himself from his presidential running mate led Pence to make claims that will be easily disproved by journalists who know how to locate videotape of what he and Trump have said only weeks or months ago.
Within minutes after the debate concluded, many commentators proclaimed that Pence had won the debate because Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine had violated their sense of decorum with repeated interruptions. And Kaine might well have interrupted less, not so much to display good manners as to let viewers hear his opponent talk. But often and audibly enough, Pence simply attempted to deny that Trump had said the very things that Trump undeniably said, often after shaking his head vigorously. He didnt say that! the Indiana governor blurted, knowing full well that he did say it. And Pence lied about his own statements, too. Perhaps the most glaring example came during a heated exchange between Kaine and Pence about Vladimir Putin whom the Republican disparaged, in an effort to pivot away from Trumps embarrassing embrace of the Russian authoritarian, as small and bullying, and vowed to confront with strength.
When Kaine retorted that not only Trump but Pence himself had praised Putin as a strong leader, Pence interrupted indignantly. Thats absolutely inaccurate, he said.

(15,369 posts)It is truly a disgusting GOP ticket - the absolute worst ever. And I never thought that I would never live to see a ticket as evil as Bush II-Cheney.
Hi Cha! Long time no see!

(45,002 posts)Pence apparently has no conscience - he wraps
his deceits all up in a nice warm cuddly blanket.
This is the kind of guy who would put smiley faces on
death camps and sell you on a relaxing vacation.
Mike Pence made me shudder at his utterly sociopathic
debate delivery. Watch out for him in the next election.

(10,479 posts)King of the Hill. Is it another way for the GOP to get rid of A Trump? If Trump can be cataloged as "not all there" just by someone like Pence and Pence starts
his own veiled act during debates wearing 3 sizes of gloves (big hands) to look bigger, could we actually win? For me, this has been the Road to Chaos. My first vote for President was Eisenhower and I think it was the only Republican I ever voted for.

(20,219 posts)In my not very humble opinion. We are so saturated with bullshit, many people seem unable to even appreciate the wrongness of deceit anymore.
Lying is much MUCH worse than a little rudeness--necessary rudeness in this case, since Kaine wouldn't have had a chance to correct the lies otherwise.
And if there's any gap between the lie and the truth, the impact of the correction is gone.

(3,635 posts)much the way Obama was at Romney in the first 2012 debate, who tried to present an image of himself that was at odds with his positions, basically to fool the audience.
Kaine, the courtroom litigator, was determined to expose Trump and Pence for the frauds they are, while defending Hillary and making the case for her presidency.

(20,219 posts)I didn't know he had that on his resume--perfect! We need to confront the liars. A professional lie confronter is just right!

(7,403 posts)And the conflicting statements will be center stage. This was a major blunder by Pence to disagree with his boss so openly and completely. Indeed, this blunder is in a league with Ford's blunder when he said that there is no domination in eastern Europe by the then Soviet Union. Trump punted by saying he didn't see that part of the debate -- what was he doing, taking a potty break.

(14,173 posts)Kaine may be a good guy. It sounds like he is very middle of the road. He votes conservative when it suits him and more liberal when it suits him. In other words, a safe but boring pick.
Yes, the VP is ultimately there to take over if the President cannot for whatever reason. But lets face it, he or she's job is primarily to help their boss get elected, and support them while in office. I wish she had chosen Biden, or some other with more stage presence. To me he seems like someone who really does not like the spotlight. Does not like public speaking much even, and it shows. I remember thinking this when he first came on Colbert's new show. He almost seemed shy.
