Who else thinks Pence was running for President in 2020? He did not defend Trump.

He even said Trump lacks polish.

Why else would he distance himself from Trump, and insinuate he's better than Trump?

Just saying he's in it for himself, it seems.

At least from a 2020 point of view. Had Cruz held his ground and stood for his principles, he would have beau-coup ammunition for his 2020 run against HRC, which he did not. Cruz folded like a Walmart lawn chair. Pence, on the other hand, was laying the ground for his 2020 run by throwing tRump under the bus.

He would have run this time if it hadn't been for the Religious Freedom law that took him down.

They know Trump is burnt toast. Pence is a supply side free trader, is no populist upstart, appears cool and calm under pressure, and he now has a leg up for the 2020 nomination. The fact that did little to defend Trump in this debate will not hurt him a bit.

Even Pence gave it a right hook, "his words don't always come out exactly the way he means them."
