(265 posts)Partially inspired by the events of this election season. I began my research not being able to wrap my head around it; thinking how in God's name anything like that could happen, especially in a first world country. I wanted to understand what people felt about Hitler's rise to power and if anyone "saw" it coming. The short answer is that no one, of course, "saw it coming" in terms of gas chambers, enslavement and genocide...but a few people did identify him as a warmongerer from the beginning. It starts out with a charismatic figure peddling a populist agenda while stoking latent discontent, mistrust and rage.
I've read many first-hand accounts of Jews and non-Jewish Germans who lived in Germany before and after his coming to power, Kristallnacht and during the war...read about the Nuremberg Trials. After some time I realized it could easily happen again...here. And the authoritarians among us, who I feel are a sizable group, will welcome it with open arms.

(58,785 posts)It might be helpful to remember that conditions were much worse in Germany, with no real hope for improvement except by electing a very strong, angry leader who would defy the world in order to fix the devastated economy, make Stalin grow cold at the very thought of sending waves of his tanks into Germany to be destroyed, and put controls on the moral breakdown of society.
I read more than a bit about Nazi Germany also, 45 years ago when I married a Jewish man, moved to West Hollywood, and realized that a number of my MIL's friends had numbers tattooed on their arms. In the early 1930s my MIL visited family in Europe often. By the end of WWII, none were alive. None had left in time. They were educated, generally prosperous people, and why would they leave their homes and flee for their lives from something that had never happened. It was bad, but it would pass.
It's encouraging to me, actually, to read these posts indicating others are aware, even reading about populist-to-fascist movements. Others must be too. Not all that many, but perhaps this is nevertheless a learning experience for a lot more Americans than we realize. And we know it has happened and can.
As I watched his speech last night, it occurred to me that he is willing to say whatever it takes to get his audience to applaud and cheer.
He is more interested in the support of the crowd for him personally than he is in the content of his words, and the Lock Her Up shit is just icing on his narcissistic cake.
The screaming delivery, the emphatic repetition of words, the personal affection he expresses for his followers all reminded me of Hitler's speeches, and I don't even understand German.

Nevertheless, most conservatives are vulnerable to strong, authoritarian leaders, and understanding the conservative personality traits that underlie all these behaviors is critical to understanding what has been happening in our country.
Especially for them. Authoritarianism isn't a mental illness, of course. Once people are aware of weaknesses they can avoid them.

We also become more vulnerable to authoritarian leadership. The right-wing leadership understands this extremely well and has been using it against the American people for decades, for instance in retarding the economic recovery after 2008 in order to encourage people to shift more power back to the GOP.
It's way past time that this becomes common knowledge so that people will be less inclined to let themselves be cluelessly pulled around by their noses.

Re: Authoritarianism. The authoritarianism leaders have completely duped the authoritarianism followers, but the followers are so entrenched in their anger & hatred that they don't see what tools & fools they've been. The GOP has been courting these fuckers for 30 years & now the beast has grown & they realize they don't really have any control over them.

It's why I really become disenchanted with this place sometimes. I'll go looking for someplace where the maturity and generosity allows for the free expression of different views, where posters give one another the benefit of the doubt about what they are saying instead of assuming the worst, when they are generally on the same side of very polarizing issues. Where people can express their opinions and questions more gently.

PatSeg
(47,520 posts)it is hard to know what motivates him. Obviously the trip to Mexico was a publicity stunt, but I thought it was a prologue to a softer immigration policy. Being his really long immigration speech seemed to be well prepared in advance, I'm not sure what that trip was meant to do, unless perhaps it was a big "fuck you Mexico" which his base will eat up. Damn, this is truly a dangerous man.
Mc Mike
(9,114 posts)Swinish republicans like Ailes and Rove are in the background orchestrating his moves. Sure, he says stupid things off the cuff, all the time, but he went to Mexico to inoculate himself against charges that he's threatening to go to war with our southern neighbors, to play to the concerned independents who don't hate all Hispanics. Then he appears with Arpaio and Brewer in AZ to beat his chest and storm like Hitler about how all Hispanics are evil illegal alien killers. He was so quiet and respectful and presidential on the stage with Prez Nieto, then flash forward to the other side of the border, where he gives his cheering xenophobic base the red meat they desire.
Completely scripted.
I remember an interview where Michael Moore talked to a Dem congressman Jim McDermott, who was also a psychologist, about the bush Admin's Homeland Security pronounciations. They would make threatening announcements about heighthened alerts and new terror threats, and between the 'threats' would sprinkle in other official presidential pronouncements like 'Americans should live their lives, travel and visit other parts of America, go to Disneyland'. McDermott described that process as akin to telling a dog you're training two conflicting orders one after the other, which just confuses the dog.
That's what the repugnant gop brains behind trump are doing right now.
I remember the Bush years and the well timed terror threats complete with those ridiculous color-coded threat alerts. Whenever there was a negative story about the administration, all of a sudden there was some major threat or a "new" video from some Al-Qaeda leader promising some pending attack. Be very afraid!
As obvious as those Bush antics were, they were very subtle compared to Trump's. I guess he doesn't have to be subtle, as his base hears what they want to hear and they love all that red meat. Meanwhile, Trump is probably thinking, "Damn, I had no idea it would be THIS easy." He has permission to do or say whatever he wants, as the media rarely holds him accountable.
Mc Mike
(9,114 posts)their businesses. Underlings want a lucrative horse race, but know how bad fascism is for press freedom. At the bottom of the pecking order are a lot of good lowly employees who report massive failures by tRump and his campaign, report his lies, craziness, bad moves, etc. Maybe the true stuff is allowed to run because they're public airwaves, the print businesses don't want to alienate their reality based customers into unsubscribing, the '100% lie media' business model isn't lucrative, and they don't want to make powerful enemies if the side they're not backing wins anyway.
We get to see truthful coverage in media about all of tRump's failures, then the same media pretends the race is 'tightening' or competitive, when with honest coverage Hillary should have a 40 point lead, except in low population regressive states. He constantly threatens the media, and the media constantly gives him favorable coverage. It honestly has been nothing but bad news about tRumpf's campaign, all flops, gaffes, and failures, then statements from the same media about how 'well he's doing' are retailed to the public as 'reasonable'. The only way that could be true is if the big swath of the American public, that isn't political junkies, had the memory and reasoning capacity of a 2 day old baby lab mouse. Or if they're constantly being overwhelmed with an info blizzard of new crazy bad stuff lies and spin, to push all previous memories out or massage them out of any recognizable shape. The new info comes from that same media, is all provided without context and critical comment by that media, when every story should end with the comment that trump is a lying nazi.
The mouse baby brain indies story isn't true, but now we're in the position of having to argue that untrue point with the same media sources that provided evidence that tRump is appealing only to the most extreme nazi white part of America. We have to argue to the media that trump is transparently lying to 'infant mouse brained independents', while they are in fact fake non-existent swing vote independents the media is inventing, who that media implies 'are slowly being convinced he is not the crazy clownish bogeyman'.
He went down to Mexico where he could do nothing, and did do nothing. Media says that'll convince the all important swing vote bloc of indecisive moderate independents, suburban security soccer moms, and blue collar dems for raygun that he's presidential and moderate and not a xenophobe (wink to his breitbart and bundy crowd.) Then he jumps over the border to storm about his reich to a Brewer Kobach Arpaio crowd, who get all the red meat they want. No mouse brained independent caught that, the media implies that 'they are slowly being convinced' and 'he might just pull this 'thing' off'.
Pastor Burns melts down, and 'trump's campaign is doing great.' Hispanic 'leaders' for trump quit, and 'his totally not a nazi campaign is making huge inroads in convincing the US public he's not a nazi', while media shows he's openly bellowing nazi stuff to nazis in his AZ speech. He has a ton of high profile gop people and org defections, so he isn't even keeping the gop base, but 'the polls are tightening'. He's universally more loathed in every single demographic than the last 2 losing repub candidates, but those negatives 'aren't' translating down to trump connected house and senate republican campaigns. They're lying to us to ratchet reality into 'more favorable to tRump' position. They're telling us to sit and roll over at the same time.
PatSeg
(47,520 posts)That is how it appears to me. It is like they are trying to script the "race" and keep it interesting so people will tune in.
Yesterday I heard someone say "the Clinton scandal" and I cursed at the TV. There was NO Clinton scandal. There was a bogus investigation that turned up nothing, but the media refers to that as a "scandal", while there is so much dirt on Trump, that we couldn't even cover it all between now and November. You are right, Trump does threaten the media and except for a handful, they tend to go easy on him. This is how he has done business his whole adult life - bully, intimidate, and sue anyone who crosses him. Also he makes everyone in his world sign confidentiality agreements, something that probably wouldn't work so well as President of the United States.
Lately, I've heard a few journalists on TV say, "Stop treating him like he is a legitimate candidate!" Besides trying to please their big network bosses, I suppose there are some who have gotten stuck in the bubble where Trump is a viable candidate.
Mc Mike
(9,114 posts)And she said the Clinton Foundation openly fully released all of their contributors info, while Poppy and little bush both have foundations that have never done so. Poppy was getting donations while little bush was prez, and nobody from AP or WaPo ever said a peep about it. The reporter said that was true, and it should have been done. He looked completely chagrined and beaten, and she graciously thanked him for coming on to defend AP's coverage, and pointed out that she realized that it wasn't the WaPo's story.
About dRump's scandals, the media could run a story about a trump mob tie, a trump nazi tie, or a trump russian Putin oligarch or mafiya tie, every day between now and the election and not run out of topics.
If media covered him without the false equivalence they make between him and Sec Clinton, he'd be polling in the 20's.
PatSeg
(47,520 posts)with the amount of corruption, dishonesty, and criminal ties like Trump. He is very shrewd about covering his tracks with sealed court settlements and confidentiality agreements. It seems that it might have been easier to do business honestly in the first place, but I suppose it is like a game to him. Where's the fun in being a transparent businessman?
There were so many real "scandals" in the Bush years that barely got a mention in the MSM - would be unpatriotic apparently. Until Clinton, no one would have thought to question a former president's charitable foundation. How much more transparent does the press expect Hillary to be? Clearly she has the "stamina" and endurance to be president. Very few people would have survived decades of this kind of abuse.
Mc Mike
(9,114 posts)at least obscenely small if you're a 'ten billionaire'. He jumps the rent up, that he charges on his tRump towers campaign office, by $120 k? Senseless if you're worth billions, makes sense if you have nothing in the bank and a billion dollars in debt.
Li'l bush and his gang should be in the pen, now. Too bad they're not. And the only person who's ever been scrutinized, probed, investigated, vetted, and cleared more than Prez Obama is Hillary Clinton. The gop can't stop the public from voting against the gop, but they can scream and cry about it for years afterward to try to make the public embarrassed to say 'that's my President'.
Meanwhile they simultaneously run this guy who trails court cases, mob ties, and felony scandals behind him like a huge garden slug trails slime. You can tell they know what scandals are, and that they're bad, because of how much they scream and cry about scandals. But that's only to project the actual crimes and failings of their pols onto Dems. Then they dare us to challenge the alt reality they're spewing as a media narrative. 'We value ethics! Your side is evil and bad!', then they run the half ass wiseguy and brag about it. Running trump, with giuliani and Christie backing him up, and screaming 'lock her up!'? What a bunch of crooked swinish con men.
PatSeg
(47,520 posts)thing is absolutely bizarre. What kind of alleged multi billionaire begrudges contractors $20,000 or $30,000? Or doesn't pay workers the money they earned? Or promises to donate money to charities and then reneges on that promise? I have a feeling that parting with money is physically painful for him.

(32,717 posts)Trump has proposed "extreme vetting" of immigrants, despite being the child of an unskilled, poor immigrant himself.
My point was that a possible explanation for his hypocrisy is that, under his presidency, white people from mostly white countries might not be subject to the extreme vetting that Trump is proposing.
What explanation do you have for why he proposes a dramatic change in this nation's immigration process, despite being the child of an unskilled immigrant who came to this country without a pot to piss in?

Can't stand his twisted pretzel-think. Can't stand the idiot crowds who are roaring approval to some of the worst and most unworkably "ideas" I've heard in a long time.
And it seemed like there was no end to it.
Had to go do some crafting to get away from it and clear my head a little.
To anybody here who thinks - well, maybe we need to sink to this depth to shake ourselves out of it, PLEASE reconsider. We can't let this happen. We simply can't. It's WAY too big a risk, with all kinds of unanticipated complications and ramifications. And remember, THIS is the same guy who wonders, aloud, multiple times, "if we have nukes, why can't we use them?" Can anyone even minimally justify living in the kind of world after some swaggering snake-oil salesman decided to sit down at the poker game and start betting with nukes? Seriously???

To quote James Mcavoy's character from the Last King of Scotland "You're a child. That's what makes you so fucking scary."

The parallels with Hitler are truly eerie. It's like history is repeating all over again, and the cycle of violence and destruction rages on.
Scary times we are living in. Hopefully sanity will be restored in America when HRC wins.
