(CNN) Sen. John McCain knows his way around rough politics: an opponent started rumors during the 2000 presidential race that he fathered an illegitimate African-American, and a CNN fact check called false his 2008 vice presidential pick's assertion that now-President Barack Obama was "palling around with terrorists."
But the veteran politician from Arizona first elected to the Senate in 1986 said Sunday that the current Republican presidential campaign is the most brutal race he has seen, fueled in part by super PACs that have rivaled campaigns in spending on this election.

(1,372 posts)Here are our country's political leaders and they are the biggest liars in the world.
We are supposed to depend on these people to do the right thing
They are supposed to look out for our best interests
They are supposed to serve the American people!
They are supposed to stay within budget...
I'm tired of protecting myself from these idiots.
I'll be glad after the 2012 elections when President O'Bama has a Democrat majority
and we can get back to making this country -AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL!-

No, brutal is your VP whipping up a lynch crowd. John, please retire.

That, and kowtowing to the Bush machine in 2000 after that savaged his campaign, and picking Palin to be his VP, are the three single greatest factors (IMHO) for driving the current state of viciousness. Plus the fact that the GOP is vicious almost by definition.
You'd think the guy might re-evaluate some of his own actions here, but that would be SO un-Republican...

I see real evidence that this year, it won't work. I've been known as a bit of a romanticist, but I see vestiges of real enlightenment.
Let's hope it ain't just "rose colored glasses".
