If l'affaire Khan were to force Trump to drop out, how would the Republicans
pick a replacement? And what Republican in his or her right mind is going to take one for the team?

1. It won't
By what mechanism? Nope, they broke it and they bought it. He's far too narcissistic to drop out.
I love the Khans. |

5. Yeah, I hear ya. Im wondering if Trump sees the sestruction if both his brand and
his presidential ambitions, whether he might bail. If he were to do so, what would the Republicans do?

2. it's not happening.
general elections have shown landslides with no one withdrawing.
1972, mcgovern got all of 17 electoral votes 1984, mondale got only 13. both stuck it out. trump will get far more electoral votes even in our best realistic case scenario. aside from the fact that his ego won't let him quit, he can always tell himself he's one hillary "scandal" away from winning. right up until he loses. |

3. Someone once said (maybe a Japanese General or Admiral during
World War II?) that the American people are slow to rouse but, once aroused, are an unstoppable mass.
L'affaire Khan has the potential to drive Trump's support nationally down into the teens. |

12. "i fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
it's a quote from a movie, not verified to have happened in real life.

14. Thank you so much for annotating my comment. As I grow older, it never ceases to amaze me
how my memory of events and knowledge of history blend in so seamlessly with cinema.

6. Plus if he drops out, the nom would fall to Pence
And then the Kochs would jump in with both wallets, and we don't need that.

11. not that it would happen, but the republican party committee would choose.
not clear at all that they would go with pence.
also not clear that the kochs would waste their money. if there is a replacement candidate, it would be very, very hard for them to win. |

4. Trump dropping out would be a disaster
Because there would be a much higher chance of a Republican president. For example, polls consistently showed Kasich beating Hillary

7. Yeah. My question is how they get from Trump bailing to Kasich (or
anyone else) becoming the nominee.

10. I think Cruz has his eyes set on 2020, which will be a referendum on
Last edited Sun Jul 31, 2016, 11:47 AM - Edit history (1) Hillary's first term. The die hard Trumpsters wont vote for him this go-round. Same goes for Kasich. So who would take one for the team this time?

It will actually solidify his support among his base.

15. I believe it is imperative that Trump stays in.
There are a number of people I would hate to see running on their side.

16. Why would he drop out?
He have been saying bizarre things from the start. And he got the nomination anyway. Why in the world would he drop out?

17. If he saw not only his presidential ambitions but also his brand start to self-destruct, he might
be convinced to bail by the party pooh- bahs.
I think the Khan Affair might just awaken Americans' decency gene (apologies for the mixed metaphor) and brand Trump with eternal opprobrium, much like Joseph McCarthy, eponymous creator of "McCarthyism." |
