Heidi Heitkamp on brink of upset win in N.D. U.S. Senate race

GOP destroyed in Senate races - what a night!

Democrat Heidi Heitkamp was on the cusp of an upset in the North Dakota Senate race early Wednesday morning, leading Republican Rep. Rick Berg by about 3,000 votes with 97 percent of precincts reporting.

Late returns had Heitkamp ahead with 50.5 to Berg’s 49.5 percent.

According to the Bismarck Tribune, a mandatory recount will is triggered if the one candidate leads by less than a half percent. If a candidate wins by a 0.5-percent to 2-percent margin, the loser can request a recount.

Berg was seen as a solid favorite in the race, which had always been seen as a longshot for Democrats. But Heitkamp, a likeable former state attorney general, ran a stronger than expected campaign in a state that has tilted Republican in recent years.
