2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhere's the protests? R Convention
I haven't heard much at all about protests at the RNC. Are any ongoing? My only news checking has been DU and CNN for about 10 minutes a day this week.
Just before the convention an older protest leader said there would be riots, tear gas and stuff.
Are the police just doing a good job at controlling the situation, are the protests just peaceful or is the media under reporting?
I haven't seen anything about them on DU except the code pink tennis ball post this morning.

(13,340 posts)Ya know... Hillary is the REAL threat.
I've been on the Hillary train since the first debate.
Not sure how your post pertains to my OP.
I was expecting chaos at the R convention and am surprised I don't see any.

(14,449 posts)Also referring to the "fart-in". It was cute.
As far as Repug protests, I think maybe Thursday when Donald speaks. Also a lot of protesting was done the month before which is a lot of work. Maybe taking a breather. Or the police are doing s great job. Who knows.

(58,785 posts)expected 5000 (down from original 10,000), but only maybe 200 max showed. Announcers are saying in the hall hatred for Hillary far exceeds exhibition of liking for Trump, and many seats are empty in the big hall.
Perhaps we're seeing the pub version of apathy, leaving the thousands of police to control anti-Trumpers, who are themselves having trouble finding a good Trump group to act out against.
Other speculation is that the press are tamping down their coverage of minor incidents to assist the police, in much the same way they cooperate by not making serial killers and terrorists overly famous, with a personal interest thrown in this time. I head more than one reporter speculating about their own safety.

(25,245 posts)start trouble at the Dem convention to make Hillary and the Dems look bad.
I'm thinking the media is purposely avoiding talking about any protests in Cleveland - but will make hay about even the slightest of protests in Philly.
The media needs to make this election look like a contest to keep the people watching and prop up Trump.
Next week will be interesting IMHO.

(2,542 posts)that it's more important to protest the Democratic Convention than to protest the GOP Convention. (Fortunately, most have exposed their true GOP affiliation by self-deporting themselves over to the pro-Trump hate-speech-forum known as "JackPineRadicals." Their "brilliant" idea this year, put forth by former Green Party vice-presidential candidate Cheri Honkala, is to gather people to eat a large quantity of beans and then have a massive "fart-in" as a form of protest against Democrats. As an extra "bonus," any food they are unable to eat and waste will be backhandedly donated to the homeless. Instead of, you know, all the food they collect and cook, as would be a much better usage of their time and efforts.
They're going to show just how "progressive" they are by wasting food, insulting the homeless, and protesting their own allies.

(2,550 posts)I was just curious and I'm glad the protests aren't distracting from how bad this convention is.

(10,857 posts)This convention has been a best-case argument against Trump and the new face of the Republican Party. They profit from demonstrations against them, being able to add to the climate of fear and uncertainty.
It looks like someone managed to convey that idea to those who unwisely sought to add to the tension, and we might further guess that the small numbers that have shown up are Roger Stone's paid disruptors, looking to start a riot in a crowd that never showed.

Media kinda built it up beforehand.
