14. Actually, that does sort of happen. I call it being "captured by cliche."

Often a student they will start to write something but the first part of the phrase will led him or her to go on autopilot and produce words that would typically follow those first words in cliched speech or writing, even if the student was originally trying to say something quite different.

"Why does everyone think Shakespeare is such a great writer? His plays are full of cliches!"

I had to explain that when Shakespeare wrote them, they were original, and they became cliches only because they were so well said and on the mark.
