Why would Hillary need to give Trump (if it's Trump) a debate and a debate might work against her.

(115,836 posts)He'll bluster and call people names and show off his ignorance, but he thinks he's smarter than everybody else, especially that woman. You damn betcha there will be debates. Hillary will mop the floor with him but he will think he won. Everyone else will realize that he doesn't know shit about anything.

(18,402 posts)Even though I was a strong Obama supporter in 2008, I had to admit she excelled in the debates against him. And I also think she excelled in the debates against Sanders, who had trouble responding to any question that didn't directly address his usual talking points.
There will be debates before the GE. There always are. And Hillary Clinton will have strong, measured, factual, policy-driven statements and Donald Trump will be quacking like Donald Duck.

His name calling schtick won't work any more. People are on to it and they will be demanding actual policies.

(23,970 posts)let him try to sell his schtick to an audience comprised of general election voters, and then get thoroughly thrashed in the rebuttals... nah, i think HRC wouldn't just "need" to debate DJT, she'd enjoy it.

(11,607 posts)She is great in that forum. I say this as a 2008 Obama supporter who used to dread watching them debate towards the end because she was so much better at it (although he got a lot better at debating as the election went on). I remember sometime that summer seeing her interviewed as a surrogate for Obama. There was one obnoxious question that I can't remember the substance of, but after hearing her answer, I remember thinking "wow, I'm glad to have her on our side now."
