2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWould Tim Kaine Be a Good VP Pick?
I am reading articles today saying that Tim Kaine is quickly looking like one of the top candidates for the VP nomination. I am marginally familiar with the man, such as being Virginia's governor, Senator, head of the DNC, etc. However, I have no clue what kind of appeal he would have as a VP candidate. Now keep in mind, I'm not raising doubts about him, I just legitimately don't know enough about him.
So, does he have that populist appeal that many dems are looking for? Is he a good attack dog? Is he good at debating? Is he a captivating public speaker? Does he have any major scandals that we need to worry about?
How should we feel about Tim Kaine as a potential VP pick?

(1,825 posts)And someone like Raul Grijalva or Jeff Merkley would be more capable of retaining the Bernie supporters.

(898 posts)And how many people are there thinking, "I wasn't going to vote for Clinton, but now that Tim Kaine is on the ticket, I'm in!"? You can count them on one hand. Be bold, Hillary, and pick Warren.

(29,310 posts)reputation or any sort of support base here, I haven't heard anything from him since we got him elected. The only thing on his side is that he's a dem who hasn't done anything scandalous. He's a nice guy with a cute smile, maybe that should be added.
Proud Public Servant
(2,097 posts)HRC is a cautious, calculating, play-it-safe politician most comfortable with the Beltway establishment. Given the need to take down Trump and the obvious excitement around figures like Sanders and Warren, that's the LAST thing she needs to be reinforcing. So, not so much.

I much prefer Becerra even though he stands little chance.

(28,394 posts)I think Pres. Obama considered him, too. He seems very unexciting to me, but seems to be well-regarded among the upper echelon democrats.
I would like to see O'Malley or Sherrod Brown.

(28,394 posts)And if I recall, he was between Hillary and Bernie on the progressive/liberal continuum. He was a big-city mayor and a governor. I know he has been criticized on crime, but he has been for gun control.
I'm not up to researching every position he has taken, but I liked him and believe he ran a civil and gentlemanly campaign.

(1,198 posts)voter who doesn't already support Hillary but who would support Hillary-Kaine? That person does not exist.
This would be a failure on the first test of leadership - a failure to unite the party.
