(58,785 posts)blatantly opportunistic and uncalled for. He is still a very busy man, there are dozens of other Democratic senators who could assist, and this filibuster is only symbolic anyway, hoping to get some TV time. They're not exactly storming Bushmaster's headquarters under heavy fire.
Criticizing him for being on the wrong side of those gun bills he voted against. Although it might have been nice if he'd lent himself to this, imo pointing that out is about as far as this should go. There're other really bad and immoral things he's actually guilty of, like trying to overset the Democratic membership's vote (deliberately pulling in hostile conservatives to do that is really, really bad!) and dumping VT's nuclear waste on Sierra Blanca.

If there is any silver lining to the terrible tragedy in Orlando, it is for us to bring people together to prevent violence of all kinds.

What sense does it make for people to be able to purchase military-style weapons designed to kill people? #Enough
Ban Military-Style Weapons
The weapon used in Orlando was legally purchased. It's past time for us to rethink whether someone should be able to purchase an assault weapon designed to kill people.

The mental splitting that some are going through is quite astonishing.*
I think to myself, "What the fuck is wrong with some of these petty people?"
One minute, Sanders is a media hound, just out to grab the spotlight.
The next minute, he's not telling other senators to stand down, because he is more important than they are.
The filibuster was successful, with the scheduled senators at hand.
Some here just seem to think that the senators who speak just run up to the podium, ad hoc.

*Note: Removed the word 'here' because some overly sensitive censoring types will use that as an excuse to flag.
Some here live by censoring opposition thought, because that's exactly what pragmatic progressive democracy is about.
Shutting down the opposition, caving to the median, to slow any progress to a crawl.

I watched a few hours of that filibuster and was glad to see so many Senators involved and am surprised there is going to be a vote.
Sandy Hook is the one that surprised me.
Anyway thanks for the response

(8,651 posts)Remember when this all started, before anyone actually announced? There were people posting about 2016 before the 14 mid-terms. At that time, many of us who did not want Hillary to be the nominee made our feelings known. Liz Warren was a favorite for us; Bernie wasn't even being mentioned them, IIRC. What I remember most though was the vitriol aimed at those like me; my comment then was that I would prefer Hillary to not run, period. We were chased and hounded by certain members; called names such as left leaning libertarians, told we weren't real democrats, and subjected to constant demands that we pledge to support the nominee, meaning Hillary of course. The ugliness has only escalated since then. The bottom line is that if Liz Warren had run for the nomination, she would be as reviled as Bernie is now by these people, because they want to destroy anyone who doesn't think Hillary is the best thing ever.

Wendy Davis's remarkable filibuster to deny passage of abortion bill
Senator's 11-hour speech successfully stalls bill that would close almost all abortion clinics in America's second-largest state
At 11.18am on Tuesday, a little-known Texas senator named Wendy Davis stood up and began a passionate speech against a bill that would severely restrict access to abortions in America's second-largest state.
Ten hours and 45 minutes later the 50-year-old was still talking, still on her feet, and the embattled pro-choice movement had a new national icon.
Wearing a smart jacket and pink running shoes, Davis embarked on an epic filibuster attempt to deny the bill passage through the Texas legislature by talking non-stop for 13 hours to prevent a vote. With less than two hours to go before the midnight deadline, she was finally silenced when Republicans challenged her on a "three strikes and you're out" rule, claiming she had violated regulations by twice straying off-topic and by allowing a colleague to help her with a back brace.
But with the aid of fellow Democrats and hundreds of cheering, jeering protestors, the bill was successfully stalled amid chaotic scenes lasting into the early hours of Wednesday. By then, hundreds of thousands of Americans were following events live on social media and Davis had become a star.
As a fitness enthusiast she had the stamina required for the gruelling feat of endurance. The rules are strict: no digressions, no food or water, no leaning on a desk, no bathroom breaks. And no sitting - Davis's chair was removed when she started speaking, hence the need for comfortable footwear.

(2,586 posts)I hope this is acceptable according to DU's various policies:
WHY OH WHY are the HRC backers CONTINUING to trash Bernie & supporters.....?
When after a very bitter primary season (recently I read a post suggesting that 2007-08 was worse on DU than this cycle, which as I remember is is not implausible) we Obama backers NEVER did anything like this to trash Hillary Clinton after he became the presumptive nominee. Sure there was the PUMA stuff, but it never gained traction, in part as the PUMAs were never given much to latch on to. It was simply political common sense -- and BELIEVE ME, there was plenty to be resentful about concerning the HRC 07-08 campaign for anyone who wanted to keep pouring salt into those wounds. But Obama and his backers were out to win. This time I'm not so sure when it comes to Hillary surrogates & supporters.
Both on DU and in other contexts, I see the need to put down Bernie (often as here there is the unavoidable suspicion that the target is really the (relatively) progressive wing of the Democratic Party and its agenda) and upbraid Bernie for what? For not dropping out? For TWEETING for God's sake? What Bernie is doing is crucial for the longer term goals of his campaign, which may seem like a perverse or presumably self-serving concern -- but HRC backers should be interested -- if seeking to really win in the general -- not in all this "so there" stuff at Bernie as in carefully setting the strategy for winning over the highest percentage of Bernie backers possible. This kind of crap, writ large, is worse than merely counterproductive -- it is toxic
I have supported Bernie since day 1 and continue to back him until he decides to end his campaign, which may very well not be till the Convention, for strategic reasons. I support that decision, if that is what he decides. He has also said he will support the Democratic ticket, though not definitively enough to satisfy some. I plan to vote for the Democratic presidential ticket in November whether or not Bernie is at the top of the ticket, and to urge at least those Bernie backers in swing states to do the same. But the approach of folks urging Bernie to drop out, or shut up, or 'tone it down' or whatever, when since March 16 they should have been thinkng strategically -- how NOT to alienate any more Bernie backers than necessary, but no. And it seems after trashing Bernie and his base, the stage is set for blaming the Left for any victory of Trump and the GOP in November, just like in 2000, though even less plausibly this time around
All the anti-Sanderista sentiment continuing to pour out can ONLY tend to alienate Bernie's base and help Trump -- and THAT IS OBVIOUS

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
