Paul Ryan reminded me of a VP candidate who also ran for his current seat, just to be safe. (Original Post) bleever Nov 2012 OP

To be honest, Joe Biden ran for his Senate seat at the same time in 2008. Jennicut Nov 2012 #2

But Paul Ryan is a complete jerk and idiot. And Lieberman will no longer be my Senator very, very soon.

I guess the difference between them and Biden is that Biden's electorate wanted him back if he lost.

Lloyd Bentsen did it, Lieberman did it, Biden did it, Lyndon Johnson did it. It makes perfect sense and actually resigning would make it harder for the party to hold the seat. Senators, in particular, spend nearly the whole six year term fundraising now and would have no chance of running for a seat with only a few months to prepare. If you want to see an example of someone doing just that and how awful it ends up going look at NC governor's race. Walter Dalton is down by double digits because Bev Purdue decided not to run days weeks before our primary so we have a man running who has had less than 8 months to prepare against a man who has had 4 years and it shows.

is the kind of response to a post that takes the real question seriously, and tells me more about it, and makes me think of it in a bigger framework.

The wonder of DU.
