As Bernie Sanders pledges to take his presidential campaign all the way to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this July, President Obama appeared to imply that Sanders' efforts are all but over even if he wont explicitly call on Sanders to drop out.
Asked whether he believes the Vermont senator should end his campaign given the current delegate count, he replied, I think on the Democratic side, just let the process play itself out. You mentioned the delegate math. I think everybody knows what that math is.
According to ABC News estimates, Hillary Clinton has 2,205 delegates compared to Sanders' 1,401 delegates.
Nevertheless, Obama commended Sanders for an extraordinary job raising a whole range of issues that are important to Democratic voters.
I know that at some point there is going to be a conversation between Secretary Clinton and Bernie Sanders about how we move towards the convention, Obama predicted.

There are people out there that still are hoping for a bolt of lightning that will change the situation in favor of the guy who doesn't have the delegates to prevail, and who will go down in flames on the first vote. There are people out there who believe that he will "take it to the convention" and there will be some kind of "floor fight" who do not understand that once that vote is taken, and he goes down to defeat, his only option is to wave, smile, and sit down.
If he does anything else, he won't get a decent speaking slot at the convention. And he'll have to rely on his mailing list for his Senate re-election campaign (the 2006 run was the most expensive in VT history; I wouldn't be surprised to see a pricey contest in 2018).
All of this nonsensical "Magic Math" where Sanders takes impossible leads and Hoovers up all the votes in the upcoming contests is pure pipe dreaming. I can only surmise that the reason they are keeping on with this charade is because they want to milk their donation base completely dry--there are a few more $27 donations to snatch up before they close down the circus for good, and they intend to get them.
It's hard to know how many bills they have outstanding, but that campaign has been known for both very aggressive fundraising AND very aggressive spending. It's a real "crap through a goose" enterprise--they never have much in the "cash on hand" column, which makes it more difficult for them to pivot and re-direct should needs must.
